We are seeking an inspiring English Teacher to join a supportive and inclusive Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), working with students who require additional support to re-engage with education. The Role
As an English Teacher, you will deliver engaging and accessible English lessons to small classes of students with diverse learning needs and backgrounds. You will play a vital role in helping pupils develop their reading, writing, communication, and analytical skills while fostering positive relationships that support personal growth and academic progress. Working alongside pastoral teams, support staff, and external agencies, you will create an environment where students feel safe, motivated, and empowered to achieve their potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver High-Quality English Lessons: Plan and deliver creative, engaging, and differentiated English lessons that inspire students and support progress across Key Stages 3 and 4.
- Promote Literacy Development: Develop students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, helping them gain confidence and achieve academic success.
- Support Student Engagement: Build positive relationships with pupils, using innovative teaching approaches to re-engage learners who may have become disengaged from education.
- Behaviour Management: Implement effective behaviour management strategies that promote positive choices, emotional regulation, and a productive learning environment.
- Personalised Learning: Adapt teaching to meet individual learning needs, abilities, and EHCP requirements where applicable.
- Monitor Progress: Assess, track, and report on student progress, identifying barriers to learning and implementing targeted interventions.
- Work Collaboratively: Liaise closely with teaching assistants, pastoral teams, families, and external professionals to ensure students receive consistent support.
- Prepare Students for Qualifications: Support learners in working towards GCSE English Language and Literature or alternative accredited pathways, depending on individual needs and abilities.
What We’re Looking For
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A recognised teaching qualification (QTS, QTLS, or equivalent).
- Experience teaching English at Key Stage 3 and/or Key Stage 4.
- Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.
- Experience working with students with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, or within alternative provision is desirable.
- A flexible, patient, and resilient approach to teaching.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- A commitment to inclusion, safeguarding, and raising aspirations for vulnerable young people.
- The ability to inspire confidence and motivate students to overcome barriers to learning.
