Key Responsibilities
- Deliver tailored lessons: plan and teach functional skills in English, mathematics and ICT, ensuring lessons are accessible, engaging and relevant to each pupil’s needs and abilities.
- Promote life skills: help students develop the practical skills necessary for everyday life, further education and the workplace.
- Support individual progress: adapt teaching methods and resources to address the diverse needs of pupils, including those with autism, learning difficulties and SEMH challenges.
- Monitor and assess performance: track and record student progress, providing regular feedback to pupils, parents and the wider team.
- Collaborate with staff: work closely with teachers, therapists and support staff to deliver cohesive, multidisciplinary support.
- Implement behaviour management strategies: use positive reinforcement and other techniques to foster engagement and self‑regulation.
- Prepare students for accreditation: support pupils working towards functional skills qualifications and other appropriate accreditations.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- A relevant teaching qualification, such as PGCE, Cert Ed or Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET).
- Experience teaching functional skills in English, mathematics and ICT, ideally within an SEN or alternative education setting.
- Knowledge of the functional skills curriculum and its application to a special needs context.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, parents and colleagues.
- Empathy, patience and resilience to support students through challenges and celebrate their successes.
- The ability to use a variety of teaching methods and resources to accommodate different learning styles.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
