Salary: £160–£220 per day (dependent on experience and qualifications)

We are currently recruiting a Maths Tutor to join a specialist alternative provision in Bradford. This is a rewarding opportunity to teach and inspire young people who have become disengaged from mainstream education due to social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, trauma or other barriers to learning. This provision operates across two sites – a main education site and an outdoor learning-based site – providing a therapeutic, personalised curriculum that focuses on rebuilding confidence alongside academic achievement. The successful candidate will be flexible and willing to work across both settings as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging Maths lessons to students working at a range of abilities, including Functional Skills and GCSE level
  • Differentiating learning to meet individual needs, learning styles and EHCP outcomes
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with young people who may have experienced disrupted education
  • Using creative and practical approaches to re‑engage learners in Maths
  • Supporting students to develop confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning
  • Assessing, monitoring and recording student progress, adapting teaching where required
  • Working collaboratively with support staff, SEND professionals and external agencies
  • Promoting positive behaviour through consistent routines, clear expectations and restorative approaches
  • Contributing to a safe, nurturing and trauma‑informed learning environment

The Young People

  • Aged 11–16
  • Present with social, emotional and mental health needs
  • Many have experienced trauma, adverse childhood experiences or prolonged absence from education
  • Some learners may display behaviours that challenge and require calm, consistent support
  • Benefit from personalised learning, smaller class sizes and strong relationships with trusted adults

Person Specification

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS/QTLS) or significant experience teaching or tutoring Maths
  • Experience teaching Maths to secondary‑aged pupils
  • Ability to adapt teaching for learners with additional needs and varying academic abilities
  • Experience supporting students with SEMH, SEND or challenging behaviour would be highly advantageous
  • Strong classroom and behaviour management skills
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within an Alternative Provision, PRU or specialist education setting
  • Experience delivering GCSE and/or Functional Skills Maths
  • Knowledge of trauma‑informed practice and restorative approaches
  • Experience working with learners who are disengaged from education
  • Experience contributing to EHCP reviews and target setting

Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS/QTLS) or equivalent teaching qualification (preferred)
  • Degree in Mathematics or a related subject
  • Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)

Knowledge & Understanding

  • Strong understanding of the secondary Maths curriculum
  • Awareness of strategies to support learners with SEMH and additional needs
  • Understanding of safeguarding legislation and statutory responsibilities
  • Knowledge of effective differentiation and inclusive teaching practices

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to inspire confidence and motivate reluctant learners
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills
  • Calm, patient approach to behaviour management and de‑escalation
  • Strong organisational and assessment skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Good IT skills for planning, assessment and record keeping
