Our client, a high technology business, is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join their team in the manufacturing sector. This permanent role requires significant experience in mechanical engineering, with responsibilities spanning mechanical design activities across the business. The role involves working collaboratively with engineers and colleagues both in the UK and US to ensure product design and manufacture ability meet client needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of the physical mechanical design process of all products to ensure they meet standard design guidelines and policy.
  • Design components for radiation detection systems based on product and customer requirements.
  • Use CAD software (Solidworks) to create and modify parts for CNC machining, injection moulding, sheet metal bending, and 3D printing.
  • Build models and prototypes to validate and test designs.
  • Provide lean solutions to challenges arising during the product development life cycle.
  • Lead and participate in peer design reviews to ensure best design practices.
  • Support and direct the team to produce specifications for products and materials to be used in production.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering, software engineering, physics, and sales to ensure new product designs meet customer requirements.
  • Support tool/design meetings for new product introductions, informing teams on parts, assembly, timing, and cost issues.
  • Utilise external experts when required and make informed decisions on design issues.
  • Develop and maintain lean mechanical engineering processes.
  • Delegate responsibilities and supervise the work of direct reports, providing guidance, coaching, and motivation.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience using Design Failure Mode and Analysis (DFMEA).
  • Experience in the design and testing of EMC and IP compliant equipment.

Knowledge:

  • Degree in mechanical engineering or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Hands-on mechanical engineering experience in designing, developing, and testing technology products.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks design suite.
  • Working understanding of SW FEA package.
  • Designing and producing engineering solutions for varied environmental requirements (e.g., temperature, vibration, shock, ingress protection, EMC).
  • Current manufacturing techniques knowledge (e.g., sheet metal fabrication, machining, plastic moulding).
  • Material property selection for different fields and global climates.
  • Compliance through design analysis and testing.
  • Detail drafting and geometric tolerance practices.
  • Documentation control processes and engineering change management.
  • Knowledge of BOM construction.
  • Structured problem-solving tools and methodologies.
