As the Director of Engineering, you will lead the engineering department to ensure the provision of engineering technical expertise and oversight across the end-to-end asset lifecycle, ensuring that our operation is safe, reliable, compliant and high-performing.

What you’ll be doing as a Director of Engineering

You will be responsible for transforming the department to establish a single engineering function that provides professional and organisational oversight of engineering activity across the business. Engineering support will span the breadth of the operational business, ensuring a safe, reliable and compliant operation that is efficient and provides high service levels to customers.

Stakeholder management will be key to the role, both internally and externally with regulators. The successful candidate will therefore need to display a high degree of impact and credibility.

The engineering department will work closely with supply chain and partner organisations, embrace innovation and continuously drive improvement to improve the performance of the asset base deploying technical solutions that balance economic, societal and environmental value as the business strives to achieve a net zero future.

By providing strategic leadership and direction of Engineering comprised of a multidisciplinary team you will be delivering safety, innovation, quality, and process improvement to support the asset management strategy objectives in line with the direct budget control and influence the purchasing budget.

  • Experience and knowledge of change management principles to lead transformation through people, process, data, and technology.

  • Excellent understanding of systems integration requirements in the context of an operational business.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of capital projects, programmes, asset maintenance planning, and engineering delivery in a complex, real-time operations environment.

  • Knowledge of procurement, managing contractual and supplier interfaces, legal compliance, financial management and controls, project delivery processes and governance.

  • Strong aptitude for holistic and integrated thinking.

  • In-depth knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation, guidance, and best practice.

Essential skills & qualifications

  • Minimum of honours engineering degree. (or equivalent)

  • Formal professional recognition (CEng, CSci) through the relevant body.

  • Fellowship of a relevant engineering institute.

  • Ability to create a case for change, manage resistance and lead the successful implementation of change through engagement and coaching.

  • People, financial, project and programme management experience is essential

  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal.
