SSA are currently working with a leading M&E contractor based in London, searching for a Design Manager. Based in London and reporting to the Design and Engineering Director, you will be responsible for the effective performance of the design team and its ability to deliver design projects for the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the design team's overall strategy and resource plan, and oversee the production of all design deliverables.
- Work with lead engineers to ensure proper resourcing, task delegation, and quality control measures are implemented.
- Assist in work-winning activities, resource planning, and ensure timely review input delivery.
- Monitor and report on design costs across projects, proposing mitigation strategies for potential overruns.
- Lead planning and implementation of QA & design verification processes for external 3rd party consultants' deliverables.
- Develop and enhance the company's Design Project Management Pathway QA procedures for internal and external design outputs.
- Ensure inherited concept designs are technically reviewed for suitability and compliance, implementing control measures for corrections if necessary.
- Challenge design production and output with efficiency and value in mind to increase profitability.
- Contribute to de-risking projects from bid inception to completion by reviewing and ensuring proper input into the R&O schedule.
- Track and communicate project changes effectively.
- Assist in resolving technical challenges and legacy issues within projects.
- Report regularly on progress to the Design & Engineering Director, and escalate issues as needed.
- Support professional development of team members through coaching, training, and exposure opportunities.
Requirements:
- Minimum 10 years of design-specific experience in the UK MEP Building Services industry.
- At least 2 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., Design Manager, Engineering Manager).
- Thorough understanding of all BSRIA work stages.
- Proven ability to maintain positive relationships with clients and stakeholders.
- Ability to develop relationships across departments and promote the design team's capabilities.
- Proficiency in Navis Works is essential; experience with Hevacomp/Cymap, Amtech, Relux/Dialux, Revit, AutoCAD, MagiCAD, IES/TAS/SAP is desirable.
- Qualified to HNC level in Building Services or similar; a degree is desirable but not essential.
- IOSH Managing Safely certification or equivalent.
- 5+ years in a similar position.
