Job Description
A Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for preparing and administering radioactive materials to patients, operating specialized imaging equipment to capture diagnostic scans, and ensuring patient safety throughout nuclear medicine procedures, all within a hospital or clinic setting.
Responsibilities
- Perform complex imaging and non-imaging tests on patients of all ages, from neonatal to geriatric, requiring professional judgment and interaction with patients, physicians, and allied health professionals.
Work independently while receiving technical supervision as needed.
- Apply knowledge of Nuclear Medicine, Positron Imaging, radiation safety, and evaluate test results to determine the need for concomitant or additional studies.
- Calculate and administer accurate radionuclide and pharmaceutical doses, including manual decay and concentration formulas, for patients ranging from neonate to geriatric.
- Enter all radiopharmaceutical data—kit activity, patient dosage, and associated information—accurately into logbooks and maintain current pharmacy records, including daily summaries, surveys, and instrumentation checks.
- Conduct imaging procedures: verify patient identification, order, diagnosis, and appropriateness; review labs and other correlative imaging; visually inspect patients for artifacts or motion; educate patients and explain the procedure; address concerns to encourage cooperation.
- Acquire and process planar, 2‑dimensional, or 3‑dimensional data, produce high‑quality images, and apply appropriate annotation, magnification, and format.
- Apply knowledge of cross‑sectional anatomy and SPECT applications; adjust study parameters—such as matrix size, acquisition time, filtering—to improve diagnostic value.
- Operate imaging equipment (scintillation cameras, PET CT, gamma counters, computer systems, multiformatting devices, aerosol delivery systems, etc.); perform quality control, calibration, routine maintenance, and report equipment problems while maintaining patient flow.
- Ensure radiation protection: check all radionuclide shipments for contamination, document receipt and disposal, monitor personnel and patient rooms, report excess exposure incidents, and maintain personal protective equipment usage.
- Maintain accurate documentation of patient pregnancy or breastfeeding status, as required, and manage related information in the patient folder.
Qualifications
- Education: Successful completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology training program.
- Certification: ARRT (N) or NMTCB certification as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, BLS Certification (Basic Life Support), and any additional required certifications.
- Experience: At least 1 year of relevant experience in nuclear medicine technology.
