Job Description

To provide Electrical Engineering support and leadership to projects through design to completion.

This will involve all stages from tendering, design, installation, testing, commissioning and handover of Electrical installations throughout the projects to ensure successful delivery from a HSE, programme, quality, compliance and commercial perspective.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise design and engineering activities across multiple disciplines on projects, overseeing a team of engineers, design managers, lead engineers, specialists and BIM/CAD technicians.
  • Design low and high voltage electrical systems up to 33k V in accordance with all current standards, prioritising safety, maintainability, ease of installation, design sustainability and environmental impact.
  • Design typical systems including Lighting, CMS sizing and layout, Earthing and bonding, UPS, Switchboards/LVAC, VSDs, lightning protection (in collaboration with specialist suppliers).
  • Undertake electrical design modelling with industry programmes such as Prodesign and Amtech.
  • Conduct formal electrical design review and verification (CAT2 checking) to ensure buildability and constructability, identifying design weaknesses or errors that could jeopardise functionality.
  • Apply HSE best practices and ensure all risk registers comply with installation parameters.
  • Familiarise with PLC control systems, SCADA, BMS, and participate in HAZID, HAZOP, and HAZCON studies as required.
  • Provide engineered solutions to key project problems, balancing client expectations, project restrictions and budget considerations.
  • Maintain design registers, meeting minutes, drawing registers and other documentation in line with VVB and project requirements.
  • Manage formal communication such as RFIs, TQs, EWNs, and MARs.
  • Liaise with the CAD/BIM team to ensure correct drawing modelling for BIM or other standards, and review drawings for clash detection and interface issues.
  • Develop scope documents for tenders and procurement processes.
  • Coordinate with manufacturers to confirm product suitability and collaborate with procurement.
  • Attend FAT and SAT (and other required stages) to verify compliance with specifications.
  • Work with installation teams to confirm design suitability, works methodology and resolve constructability issues.
  • Collaborate with the commercial department to track design changes and variances.
  • Collaborate with the planning department to schedule design, installation and T&C works, and provide accurate assessments on forecast works to maintain the project programme.
  • Lead subcontractor works where appropriate, assisting the commercial department in valuation and contract support.
  • Ensure designs and works comply with VVB and client quality management systems.
  • Stay current with electrical, construction and relevant legislation, laws, standards, and best practices.
  • Manage the electrical engineering and design teams, reviewing allocation and performance, and conduct annual performance reviews.
  • Provide training and mentoring to electrical engineering staff.

Qualifications

  • HND in Electrical Engineering.
  • Engineering Council Registration as Chartered Engineer (CEng).
  • Registered member of either CIBSE, IET or another recognised Engineering Council Institution.
  • SMSTS, CSCS Card – AQP or PQP minimum.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Experience

Seven years in a Senior or Principal Electrical Engineering position, previously working within the infrastructure environment (utilities, civils, etc.).

Experience with Low to Medium Voltage Electrical Equipment and duties similar to the role described above.
