We are looking for a Senior Technician in Mechanical Engineering to support and develop practical activities for the Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Scheme across Level 3, Level 4, and Level 6 programmes within the Skills Academy, with a particular emphasis on welding processes and techniques within a mechanical engineering context.
Responsibilities
- Support and develop practical activities for the Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Scheme (Levels 3, 4, 6).
- Provide specialist support for machine‑shop activities across several laboratories.
- Maintain, operate, and ensure safety of college equipment.
- Provide training and advice to apprentice students and staff on appropriate use of resources.
- Work autonomously and provide additional technical support across the academy as required.
Qualifications
- Practical, safety‑focused professional with hands‑on experience in welding processes and techniques.
- Strong awareness of health and safety standards; skilled in preparing, maintaining, and repairing equipment.
- Excellent face‑to‑face communication skills and ability to demonstrate tasks and processes to individuals and small groups.
- Proactive team player able to manage workload and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Organizational and strong communication skills.

This position is employed by the University of Derby and works in partnership with Rolls‑Royce Submarines Ltd. Due to the nature of work conducted by Rolls‑Royce Submarines Ltd, some roles within the Nuclear Skills Academy (NSA) require post holders to hold Security Clearance (SC). This role does not currently require SC, but a future SC check may be necessary if circumstances change.
