Our client is undergoing a period of significant growth. As a result of an increased workload across our key accounts, they are expanding their Derby site and looking for a Tooling Designer to join our world‑class engineering team.
In this role, you will be at the forefront of designing critical tooling, jigs, fixtures, and components that support some of the UK’s most complex energy and infrastructure projects. We are looking for a designer who doesn’t just draw, but who innovates—identifying effective solutions to emerging engineering problems.
Responsibilities- Lead the design of tooling, jigs, and fixtures from initial outline and concept through to detailed design and final handover.
- Identify and formulate solutions for emerging technical challenges, ensuring the final product meets all performance, reliability, and safety metrics.
- Define budgets and work programmes for the complete design lifecycle, including requirements capture and scope estimation.
- Manage Risk and Opportunity registers and prepare comprehensive product reports and technical documentation.
- Support and mentor junior team members, fostering a culture of integrity and high‑quality output.
- Engage in lifelong learning to develop new theories or methods that keep Assystem at the cutting edge of the industry.
We are looking for a self‑motivated engineer with a high degree of independence and a deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
Essential Skills & Experience- Proven experience in mechanical design, with specific emphasis on valves, pressure vessels, structural components, tooling, or lifting equipment.
- Familiarity with 3D CAD systems (ideally Siemens NX) and PLM systems (Teamcentre).
- Knowledge of analysis tools such as MathCAD, ANSYS, or ABAQUS.
- A solid understanding of relevant design codes, materials science, and safety legislation.
BEng or a similar professional qualification in an engineering‑related field.
