Overview
Lead Engineer at a large dual‑role laundry site in Wednesbury, producing linen for Healthcare and Hospitality sectors.
The site processes up to 1.5 million linen items weekly and operates 24 hours a day, 5 days a week with additional weekend work during peak periods.
The engineering department provides 24/7 reactive and proactive maintenance support.
This is a hands‑on leadership role, combining day‑to‑day people management with practical engineering responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the site engineering team, supporting colleagues while actively performing maintenance, fault finding, repairs and continuous improvement activities.
- Provide 24/7 reactive and proactive maintenance coverage across the site.
- Set targets, monitor performance, and ensure maintenance work aligns with site KPIs and production schedules.

Experience & Qualifications
- Ideally 2+ years of experience leading an engineering team (not necessarily this size)
- Experience setting targets, conducting return‑to‑work interviews, and handling low‑level disciplinary matters
- Hands‑on maintenance experience with mechanical and electrical equipment in a fast‑paced manufacturing or processing environment
- PPM planning and small project planning
- Experience using a CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System)
- Parts sourcing, purchasing and stock control
- Root cause analysis experience
- Reviewing and checking completed corrective and planned maintenance work
- Experience working within departmental budgets and achieving KPIs; ability to set targets for engineers
- Engineering compliance knowledge including LOLER, PUWER, PAT Testing and Fixed Wiring
- Level 3 Engineering qualification essential
- Management qualification desirable
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point
- Salary, Hours & Benefits
- Salary: £50,000 – £60,000 per annum (DOE)
- Company Pension Scheme (minimum 5% employee contribution; company currently contributes 5%)
- Company medical insurance
- Working hours: 5:00 am – 1:00 pm (Monday–Friday) on odd weeks; 11:00 am – 7:00 pm (Monday–Friday) on even weeks; 7:00 am – 3:00 pm when covering absence
- On‑call support during 11:00 am – 7:00 pm shifts, providing telephone advice and site attendance for business‑critical breakdowns
- Occasional weekend work when required
