We are currently seeking a Process Engineer to strengthen our capabilities in process design, scale-up, and tech transfer at our Coventry, Rhode Island site. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge pharmaceutical processes in close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in the UK, China, and US. Our Coventry site specializes in the development and scale-up of drug substance processes from early-stage route scouting through GMP manufacturing. We are a dynamic team dedicated to scientific excellence, innovation, and seamless technical execution across global sites.
Responsibilities
- Process Design & Optimization: Apply Quality by Design (QbD) principles to early- and late-phase process development. Use Design of Experiments (DoE) for process screening, optimization, and robustness studies. Define CPPs, PARs, NORs, and contribute to the development of scalable control strategies.
- Reaction Engineering: Evaluate and model kinetics, mixing, mass/heat transfer, and reactor performance. Support development of complex transformations including catalytic hydrogenation.
- Downstream Processing: Design and optimize key unit operations including crystallization, filtration, drying, distillation, and extraction.
- Modeling & Scale-Up: Use process modeling tools to inform scale-up strategies. Translate lab-scale findings into actionable parameters for kilo lab and GMP manufacturing.
- Process Excellence & Innovation: Drive cycle time reduction and process intensification initiatives. Implement innovative technologies such as continuous flow chemistry and automation platforms.
- Technical Transfer: Support internal and external tech transfer activities, including scale-down/up studies, modeling, and verification experiments.
- Technical Environment & Tools: Lab-scale capabilities: parallel reactors, high-pressure vessels, filtration and drying systems. PAT tools: ReactIR, FBRM, NIR. Specialized equipment: centrifugal, wet mills.
- Cross Functional Collaboration: Partner with Process Chemistry, Analytical Sciences, Tech Ops, and GMP Production teams. Support integrated programs across Coventry and Pharmaron sites in China (e.g., Tianjin, Shaoxing, Ningbo, Beijing). Engage in internal and external knowledge sharing, with emphasis on QbD and modeling best practices.
- Strategic Focus Areas: Strengthening scale-up and PAT capabilities for robust tech transfer. Advancing continuous processing and flow strategies. Improving manufacturability, cost efficiency, and throughput. Process safety experience very desirable.
Candidate Profile
- MSc or PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
- Industrial experience in pharmaceutical or chemical process development.
- Strong background in reaction engineering, separation processes, and process modeling.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
