Methods Machine Tools was established in 1958 with three employees and a handful of refurbished machines. Since then, the company has become one of the largest privately owned machine tool importers in North America. Methods designs and implements custom machining setups, including machine tool selection, automation integration, and turnkey automation cells. The corporate campus in Sudbury, Mass., comprises a showroom/technical center, which contains automation, applications, and a full range of cutting‑edge machines. Methods has more than 300 employees, nine technology centers, one high precision machining center, and has installed more than 45,000 machines throughout North America.

Job Summary

The Quality Engineer – ZEISS Metrology is responsible for ensuring product quality and dimensional compliance through the use of ZEISS metrology systems and quality engineering principles. This role supports manufacturing, engineering, and customers by developing inspection programs, analyzing measurement data, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Metrology & Inspection
    • CMM, hard gaging, and other required inspection support for the Applications department for Turnkey and test cut business.
    • Program, operate, and maintain ZEISS Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs).
    • Develop inspection routines using ZEISS CALYPSO, Inspect, and/or PiWeb.
    • Perform First Article Inspections (FAI), in-process, and final inspections.
    • Interpret engineering drawings and apply GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Quality Engineering
    • Investigate nonconformances and perform root cause analysis (8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone).
    • Implement Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
    • Support quality system requirements (ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO 13485, as applicable).
    • Analyze measurement data and generate quality reports.
  • Manufacturing & Cross-Functional Support
    • Partner with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Automation teams to improve processes.
    • Support new product introductions (NPI) and process validations.
    • Assist in supplier quality evaluations and part qualification.
    • Provide technical support and training related to inspection methods.
  • Customer & Compliance Support (if applicable)
    • Interface with customers during audits or quality reviews.
    • Support customer measurement requirements and documentation.
    • Assist with continuous improvement and best practices in metrology workflows.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of experience in quality engineering or metrology.
  • Hands‑on experience with ZEISS CMMs and software.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T.
  • Experience in precision manufacturing environments (machining, automation, aerospace, medical, etc.).
  • Strong problem‑solving and communication skills.
  • Experience with high‑precision or regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with statistical tools (SPC, MSA).
  • Experience supporting audits and compliance documentation.
  • Background working closely with CNC machining or automated systems.

Travel Requirements

As‑needed basis to support our other offices, estimated at approximately 10% or less.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of desk/computer work. Ability to walk manufacturing floors and assess operations. Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. Adherence to PPE and safety protocols required on shop floors.
