The HVAC Service Technician I is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This includes performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting HVAC issues, diagnosing complex system problems, and providing solutions to ensure customers' systems operate efficiently. In addition to service work, the role also involves selling HVAC replacement systems and performing start-up commissioning on newly installed HVAC units. The ideal candidate will have a deep knowledge of residential HVAC systems, excellent problem-solving skills, and a customer-focused approach to service delivery.
Essential Functions
- Troubleshoot and Repair: Diagnose and repair heating, cooling, and ventilation issues in residential HVAC systems, including furnaces, boilers, combi-boilers, air conditioners, heat pumps, and ductless systems. Use diagnostic tools, digital multimeters, and other equipment to identify issues and perform accurate and timely repairs. Troubleshoot system malfunctions, identify root causes, and recommend solutions to restore comfort in the home. Troubleshoot and repair refrigerant leaks, electrical issues, airflow problems, and other system-related issues.
- Maintenance and Service: Perform routine preventive maintenance (PM) tasks on residential HVAC systems, including cleaning coils, changing filters, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical components, and ensuring all system parts are functioning optimally. Clean and replace air filters, adjust thermostats, and inspect and lubricate moving parts (e.g., fan motors, blowers) to ensure longevity and efficiency of HVAC units. Conduct comprehensive seasonal tune-ups to keep HVAC systems running at peak performance. Offer customers tips and best practices to improve energy efficiency and system longevity.
- System Commissioning and Start-Up: Perform system start-up commissioning for newly installed HVAC units, ensuring proper installation and operational efficiency. Verify that newly installed systems are functioning correctly, making adjustments where necessary to ensure optimal performance. Test and calibrate system controls, including thermostats and dampers, to ensure they meet manufacturer specifications. Provide clients with a thorough overview of system operation, care instructions, and maintenance recommendations.
- Sales and System Replacements: Assess the need for HVAC system replacement during service visits and provide detailed replacement estimates. Educate homeowners on available options, providing solutions that best meet their needs, preferences, and budget. Present and explain product features, benefits, and energy-saving advantages of various replacement systems. Collaborate with the sales team to close sales on HVAC system replacements, ensuring customer satisfaction and retention. Promote energy-efficient products and services that align with current environmental regulations and standards.
- Customer Service and Communication: Maintain a professional, courteous, and helpful attitude when interacting with customers. Clearly explain technical problems and solutions to customers in a way they can understand. Ensure customers are fully informed about system conditions, maintenance needs, and replacement options. Foster positive relationships with clients, ensuring repeat business and customer loyalty. Accurately complete all service documentation, including work orders, invoices, and maintenance records.
- Compliance and Safety: Ensure all work is completed in compliance with local building codes, safety regulations, and manufacturer’s guidelines. Adhere to company policies regarding safety protocols, including the safe handling of refrigerants and electrical components. Ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained and used according to safety standards.
- Team Collaboration and Development: Collaborate effectively with other technicians, service managers, and the installation team to provide comprehensive service. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior technicians as needed.
