About the role
We have a brand‑new opportunity for a Sustainability Consultant or Senior Sustainability Consultant to join our team, based in either Bristol, Plymouth or Exeter. It’s an exciting time to be part of our broader Sustainability discipline which has a presence in every Hoare Lea office across the country. We provide a diverse sustainability consultancy service promoting sustainable development for a range of projects across all sectors. Our Sustainability Discipline is an industry leader in its approach to sustainable design, construction and building operation. Focused on achieving ever greater standards of environmental sustainability, the discipline thrives on its dynamic, innovative and ambitious working culture. Key responsibilities
- Support senior team members on large scale projects and take ownership of energy workstreams.
- Support or lead workshops with Clients and design teams and communicate information in a clear and concise manner.
- Support the training of junior members of the team e.g. in workstream delivery, consultancy and project planning.
- Undertake a range of modelling and analysis, which may include but not be limited to:
- Building performance simulation – e.g. CIBSE TM54, NABERS
- Building Regulations Compliance, i.e. Part L
- Thermal comfort and overheating assessments
- Parametric design analysis / scenario modelling
- Appraisals for environmental assessments such as BREEAM, e.g. Passive Design or LZC study
- Support the development of energy and sustainability strategies with our clients to lead sustainability innovation on new and existing developments.
- Support the drive towards realising net zero whole life carbon in our projects.
- Work within the Technical Excellence programme on research and development initiatives to allow us to stay at the cutting edge of knowledge in our industry.
- Engage directly with industry, undertaking research and development studies, and authoring industry guidance.
About you
You are likely to have some knowledge and competence in a selection of the following fields:

- In‑use energy assessment e.g. CIBSE TM54, Passivhaus
- Dynamic modelling for thermal comfort and overheating
- BREEAM credit appraisals

Advantageous competencies
- Advanced energy performance modelling competencies, i.e. ApacheHVAC
- Sustainability strategy development
- Environmental or wellbeing assessment
- Environmental Impact Assessment

- CRREM analysis
Obtained or working towards the following certifications:
- Passivhaus Designer
- CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant
- CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessor
- NABERS UK assessor
To be successful in this role you will need:
- Experience working within the built environment sector.
- Already working within a sustainability or engineering consultancy, you will be looking for a new challenge within a practice at the very forefront of our field.
- You will bring expertise (with a degree in engineering or science, and experience in the field) and a passion for creating sustainable solutions.
- You will relish being part of a dynamic team within a progressive and well‑respected firm.
- You will have good communication skills and an enthusiasm for working within a team environment.
