Role Summary
Provide commercially focused legal and claims support to the Chartering and Operations teams throughout the fixture lifecycle. The role is responsible for advising on charterparty interpretation, contractual risk, sanctions compliance and dispute resolution, enabling the business to make informed commercial decisions while protecting the company’s interests. Working closely with internal stakeholders and external counterparties, the Commercial Claims Manager assesses and manages claims exposure, supports the resolution of disputes, and delivers practical guidance on complex contractual and operational issues within the dry bulk shipping sector.
Responsibilities
- Give in-house guidance on a wide variety of issues that may occur pre- and post-fixture.
- Remain up to date on new regulations, case law and other relevant legal developments.
- Ensure compliance with sanctions regulations, including conducting thorough due diligence assessments to mitigate the risks of engaging with sanctioned entities.
- Assist in making good commercial decisions while safeguarding company interests, balancing customers’ needs.
- Add value to commercial dispute resolution by assessing claim exposure and providing expert opinion on optimal handling strategies.
- Handle assigned claims in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to ensure efficient and effective resolution.
Skills Capabilities & Qualifications
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence outcomes and build credibility across all levels of the organisation.
- 5-8 years of relevant experience in shipping claims handling, maritime disputes, or related legal/compliance roles.
- For candidates without direct claims or legal experience should have 10+ years of relevant dry bulk chartering and/or operations experience, including significant exposure to charter party disputes and claims management.
- Strong drafting, negotiation and dispute resolution skills.
- Comfortable working independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
