4P Consulting Inc. is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer 2 to join our team in Birmingham, AL. This position provides support to the Schatz Grid Visualization and Analytics Center (SGVAC) within Southern Company’s Research & Development department. The SGVAC is an innovative research hub that focuses on situational awareness technologies for Transmission and Distribution, with applications in synchrophasor technology, control center functions, cyber security, visualization, and simulation platforms. The ideal candidate will have 3-6 years of relevant experience, a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (accredited), and a passion for advancing grid operations technologies. The role primarily focuses on power system modeling, simulation, and data analytics, with an emphasis on big data, visualization, and emerging technologies in grid operations.

Responsibilities

  • Research and Evaluation: Develop and implement research plans to evaluate new technologies related to power systems, grid operations, and data analytics.
  • Project Management: Lead and contribute to projects focused on power system analysis, simulation, modeling, and big data analytics.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Provide documentation detailing study assumptions, methods, and results, and present findings in clear, informative reports and presentations.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross‑functional teams to deploy and assess emerging technologies, including integrating systems such as Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) and Distribution Management Systems (DMS).
  • Performance Evaluation: Evaluate the performance of new technologies and tools supporting grid operations, including the use of Real‑Time Digital Simulators (RTDS) with hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing capabilities.
  • Travel: Occasional overnight travel may be required, although not extensive.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of power system analysis, modeling, and simulation techniques, including expertise in data analytics and visualization tools.
  • Programming & Data Science: Experience with computer programming such as Python, C#, or SQL, and familiarity with data science methodologies.
  • Problem Solving: Strong problem‑solving abilities, particularly in the application of engineering analysis to address complex challenges.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills for internal and external collaboration, with the ability to present technical findings clearly and concisely.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with keen attention to detail and the ability to manage work independently.
  • Teamwork & Initiative: Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment while also being a self‑starter with a strong sense of initiative.

Education & Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution (3‑6 years of related experience).
  • Desired: Experience with computer programming (Python, C#, SQL), and data science.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of databases, data structures, and computer networking.

Work Location / Arrangement

  • Primary Location: Alabama Power Company (APC) Headquarters Building, 600 North 18th Street, Birmingham, AL, 35203.
  • Work Arrangement: Hybrid work arrangement, with expectation of in‑office presence at least 3 days a week (12 days a month).
