Design Engineer

An established Housing Contractor have an exciting opportunity for a Design Engineer with a strong focus on civil engineering design to join their Design & Technical team.

Design Engineer role

As a Design Engineer you will be involved with Demolition, Remediation and Enabling works on new build housing developments. Duties and responsibilities:

  • Carry out initial drainage and infrastructure feasibility designs to support land appraisals and cost planning.
  • Prepare early stage road and sewer layouts for site feasibility and value engineering purposes.
  • Assess site constraints and provide technical input during the land acquisition process.
  • Liaise with Technical, Land and Planning teams to inform site layouts from a drainage and levels perspective.
  • Instruct and manage external consulting engineers to undertake detailed road, sewer, and levels design.
  • Review and coordinate S104, S38, and S278 technical submissions prepared by consultants.
  • Manage and monitor progress of technical approvals from water authorities, highways departments, and lead local flood authorities.
  • Act as the internal technical lead for drainage and infrastructure delivery across multiple live and proposed sites.
  • Ensure consultant designs are buildable, cost efficient, and comply with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Provide clear technical briefs and feedback to consultants to achieve timely approvals.
  • Monitor and manage consultants' performance, budgets, and deliverables against project timelines.
  • Liaise with utility providers and statutory consultees as part of the infrastructure design process.
  • Prepare and present technical information to internal teams and directors.
  • Assist in resolving on-site technical issues in collaboration with the construction team.
  • Maintain accurate records of design iterations, approvals, and technical correspondence.
  • Attend site and design team meetings as necessary to track progress and align stakeholders.
  • Support procurement and commercial teams by providing infrastructure input into tender documents.
  • Keep up to date with changes in design standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrable successful track record in Road & Sewer Design, liaising with consultants, statutory bodies and subcontractors.
  • Possess a good all round knowledge of site development procedures and the road and sewer adoption process.
  • Extensive experience of working with contractors and knowledge of construction of roads, sewers and foundations for residential developments.
  • Experienced in the use of Microsoft office, Auto CAD and Micro Drainage. Experience using one or more of the following design packages: PDS, Civil 3D, or Site3D is essential.
  • Strong communication, listening and presentation skills with the ability to be able to build effective working relationships both internally and externally
  • Ability to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced environment
