The Role
As a Transport Planner, you will be responsible for coordinating daily transport operations, ensuring vehicles and drivers are utilised effectively while meeting customer requirements and legal obligations. You will act as a key point of contact for drivers, customers, and suppliers, responding to operational challenges in real time and ensuring the smooth running of transport activities. This role also includes responsibility for providing out-of-hours on-call support to maintain operational continuity and respond to emergency situations when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Planning and coordinating daily bulk chemical tanker deliveries and collections.
- Allocating vehicles and drivers efficiently while ensuring compliance with driver hours regulations and transport legislation.
- Monitoring fleet movements and proactively managing operational issues as they arise.
- Liaising with drivers, customers, and suppliers regarding schedules, deliveries, and service updates.
- Ensuring full compliance with ADR regulations, health & safety requirements, and company policies.
- Optimising routes and resources to maximise operational efficiency and minimise costs.
- Responding professionally to delays, breakdowns, and emergency situations.
- Acting as the primary out-of-hours contact for the transport department.
- Supporting incident reporting and escalation procedures where required.
- Working closely with maintenance and compliance teams to ensure vehicle availability and legal compliance.
- Delivering outstanding customer service while balancing operational priorities.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
- Previous experience working within a Transport Planner role.
- Strong understanding of UK transport legislation, including Drivers' Hours Regulations and Working Time Directive requirements.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and make effective operational decisions.
- Competent IT skills, including experience with Transport Management Systems and Microsoft Office.
- Flexible approach to working hours, including participation in an on-call rota.
Desirable
- Knowledge of ADR regulations relating to hazardous goods transport.
- Experience within tanker operations or chemical distribution.
- Transport Manager CPC qualification.
