Astute's Power Team is partnered with a market‑leading energy company to recruit an Operations Manager for their Biomass Power Station in County Durham.

Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for safe and efficient operation of the plant
  • Day‑to‑day management of 20+ operations staff, including shift teams and operations day staff
  • Ensure the facility operates within environmental regulations at all times
  • Liaise with the Maintenance Manager and other personnel regarding project maintenance, outages and programming of plant improvements
  • Oversee third‑party contractors
  • Prepare the annual operating department budget and manage within that budget
  • Liaise with company directors, managers and external stakeholders
  • Deputise for the Plant Manager when required

Qualifications

  • Ideally a degree in a relevant engineering field
  • Apprentice training in an engineering discipline
  • Relevant Health & Safety qualification such as IOSH or NEBOSH
  • At least five years of operational/engineering management experience on a large process plant, ideally in power; candidates from other power, utilities, refineries, petrochemical or COMAH backgrounds will be considered
  • At least five years in a senior position with supervisory, budget and commercial experience (forecasting, P/L, contract management)

Personal Skills

  • Strong leadership skills to motivate teams, set clear direction and deliver results
  • Excellent negotiating and influencing skills, building relationships and achieving positive outcomes with stakeholders
  • Strong commercial acumen, clear understanding of business drivers and ability to make profit‑focused decisions
