Senior Software Engineer to join a growing automation business delivering turnkey automated warehouse systems across the UK. You’ll split your time between development and testing in the innovation centre and delivering projects on-site across the Home Counties and Midlands, with commissioning phases typically lasting between 2–6 months.
Key Aspects of the Senior Software Engineer Role
- Working with Siemens PLCs using TIA Portal, with a strong focus on Structured Text
- Designing and developing software for automated warehousing, palletisers, conveyors and material handling systems
- Involvement in full turnkey automation projects from concept and design through to commissioning
- Developing control solutions for AGRs (automated guided robots) and automated transport systems – desirable to have some existing experience, not essential.
- Carrying out testing and development work in the Nuneaton-based innovation centre
- Supporting project delivery on-site, following systems through installation and commissioning
- Exposure to other PLC vendors such as Beckhoff and Allen Bradley – nice to have
- Collaborating with a small UK team alongside international engineering groups
- Hybrid working available when not on-site – could be as little as 1-2 days per fortnight in the office
- Suit a Senior Software Engineer with a hybrid background (hands on and programming) – someone who understands systems properly because they’ve been hands‑on earlier in their career, whether that’s electrical, mechanical or mechatronics.
Key Requirements of the Senior Software Engineer Role
- Strong Siemens TIA Portal experience is essential
- Proven use of Structured Text (ST)
- Background in automated warehousing, palletisers, AGRs, conveyors or material handling systems would be ideal
- Ability to interrogate, modify, tweak and enhance PLC code as well as develop from scratch
- Comfortable spending extended periods on-site during project delivery (likely to be 100% UK based)
The successful Senior Software Engineer will be joining at an early stage of UK growth, with multiple projects already secured with more in the pipeline. You’ll work closely with senior leadership and play a key role in shaping how projects are delivered in the UK.
