The Company

The company is a medical device company supplying a range of high accuracy machined implants and assemblies to large Blue Chip Medical Device companies. 70% of business goes to the US and the rest to the UK and Western Europe. Industries served include Orthopaedics, Neuroscience, Cardiac, Prosthetic Limb and the Anaesthetic Gas delivery markets. Accredited to ISO13485 and registered with the FDA ensures that the company stays at the forefront of world class machining.

Role Objective

The Production Engineer role involves seeing engineering projects through from start to finish and will include programming of CNC machines, prove-outs, setting and troubleshooting. A key part of the role will be the implementation of process control in all machines where possible and a continuous improvement ethic. Also, may involve programming and setting of automated metrology machinery. It could also involve other secondary operations where an engineering input would be advantageous. Close working relationships across the business is essential to the success of this role. A training plan will be agreed with the production engineer, based on existing knowledge to deliver all the skills required at the level required within our business.

Desired Skills and Abilities

  • An engineering background with an ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
  • Experience of Solidworks, HyperMill and Fusion 360 software an advantage as well as a base knowledge of metal cutting on machines and metrology.
  • Good interpersonal skills; outstanding mathematical skills; honesty; integrity; reliability; solid written and verbal communication skills; high attention to detail; organisational skills; critical thinking and problem-solving skills; research skills; analytical skills; computer skills are all desirable, but gaps will be plugged with training as necessary.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Program and operate our automated metrology equipment.
  • Produce a competent training module for that equipment as required.
  • Create and work on continuous improvement activities including process control improvements so that machines can run for more than 12 hours in an unmanned situation.
  • Set and operate the CNC machines within the company.
  • Program our CNC machines using SolidCam, HyperMill or Fusion 360 where appropriate.
  • Understand and ensure that all work is carried out as per the Company Quality Management System.
  • Update records and other duties as required.
  • Achieve a pass mark for all relevant Training Modules undertaken.
  • Member of the Production Engineering Team.

Competencies

  • A degree or equivalent level individual in an engineering discipline where Manufacturing is a key constituent. Apprentice trained is equally attractive.
  • An enthused team player with good chemistry at all levels.
  • A presentable individual with competent social skills.
  • Ability to operate independently.
  • Practical engineering judgement.
  • Comfort with documentation and compliance.
  • Continuous improvement mindset.
  • Willingness to “wear multiple hats”.
