Interaction Recruitment is partnering with a rail industry specialist that delivers expert design, engineering, project management, construction and maintenance solutions. We are recruiting a full‑time permanent Maintenance Technician based in Rugby.

The purpose of this role is to maintain the client’s owned and leased assets to ensure maximum availability and reliability, in accordance with relevant standards, procedures and legislation. Deliver required work safely and effectively, conforming to contract specifications, providing first‑level response to locomotive and wagon failures and ensuring high levels of cleanliness, reliability and performance.

Key role accountabilities:

  • Facilitate work detailed by the Team Leader/Supervisor and serve as a front‑line fitter.
  • Deliver all aspects of rail locomotives and wagons to successful completion under the guidance of the Supervisor and Team Leader.
  • Ensure all work undertaken is recorded and logged on the exam sheets.
  • Report regular updates on work in progress to the Team Leader, keeping senior management aware of operational issues and performance.
  • Apply knowledge of relevant legislation and ensure appropriate PPE is always worn.
  • Liaise with management on serious incidents such as accidents, safety issues and fatalities, and update them regularly.
  • Liaise with management on Environmental Agency and 'clean‑up' contractors of environmental incidents.
  • Liaise with management regarding drug‑screening requests.
  • Ensure all necessary paperwork and administrative duties are fulfilled and documentation is uploaded to the database and processed to the Engineering team.
  • Help team members perform their varied duties competently and fully on locomotives and wagons.
  • Remain aware of personal limits and professional boundaries, referring colleagues to senior management when appropriate.
  • Focus on development of staff to continually improve skill levels.
  • Be prepared to travel away from home for limited periods to carry out maintenance duties on locomotives and wagons.
  • Possess a full UK road vehicle driving licence, presented for inspection annually or as required.
  • Drive company vehicles in accordance with the Highway Code and company procedures.
  • Participate in sampling for analysis as part of the Condition‑Based Monitoring scheme.
  • Comply with all company procedures regarding issuance of equipment from depot‑based store holdings.
  • Ensure working‑at‑height, lifting equipment and calibrated tooling are in date and fit for purpose.
  • Participate fully and proactively in the company competency assessment programme.
  • Undertake any other duties if assessed as competent to do so.

SHEQ responsibilities:

  • Work to applicable Safety Plans and Method Statements.
  • Comply with Section 7 of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.

Competencies required for the role:

  • Recognised formal apprenticeship in Mechanical / Electrical engineering.
  • Have achieved core competencies for Classes 37/97, 43, 56, 66, 67, and 70 locomotives; wagon maintenance.
  • Possess a driving licence and PTS, DP.
  • Can work from heights, confined spaces, and manage manual handling.
  • Certified in fire training, emergency first aid.
  • Completed depot/yard inductions.
  • Excellent IT skills with working knowledge of Word, Excel and Microsoft Teams.
  • Ability to understand technical drawings and maintenance schedules.
