Description of role
The role entails managing the estimating process from receipt of enquiry through negotiation of the tender to handing the project across to the construction team in order to achieve the turnover required in the annual business plan. Scheme values £1m-12M.
Role Responsibilities
- Tender administration
- Registering enquiries on the Estimate Register
- Completing an opportunity score for each tender & prioritising workload
- Setting up tender folders
- Updating tender programme
- Administering documents – electronic &/or hard copy including printing/ filing and scheduling
- Preparing submission documents
- Sending tender decline letters
- Following up submitted tenders
- Working up rates from first principles
- Material & subcontract price enquiries
- Pricing Bills of Quantities where provided
- Undertaking take offs & preparing Bills of Quantities where required & maintaining a document register to align with the price
- Arranging for Bills of Quantities to be prepared externally when required
- Identifying areas of potential risk & ensuring appropriate, clear qualifications & clarifications are included within tender submissions
- Presentation of proposed tender documentation for finalisation with a Director prior to submission
- Timely submission of well presented tenders
- Liaison with our clients throughout the process
- Maintaining estimating records – by client, type of work etc
- Monthly & annual reporting of tender returns, values & success rates
- Maintaining & updating the company schedule of rates
Training/ qualifications:
No formal qualifications are sought in respect of this role. It is a requirement that candidates can demonstrate relevant experience in a similar role and demonstrate a sound technical knowledge of products and the local supply chain.
Skills, Experience & Personal Qualities
- Able to think clearly under pressure & prioritise workload
- An ability to assess risk & address appropriately within tenders
- A working understanding of SMM7 & the coverage of various measured works items
- A commercial understanding to find an ‘edge’ in tenders to put us ahead of the competition
- A practical experience of either RC frame or groundworks & civil engineering construction processes, materials & techniques
- An organised & planned approach to work to ensure deadlines are met
- Effective time management
