Are you detail‑driven, safety‑conscious and confident working both independently and as part of a small site team? If so, this could be the role for you!
Location: Based at Dolyhir / Strinds Quarry, near Presteigne (Herefordshire), this role will also cover our sister site in Presteigne as well as sites in Newport and Leominster. It is easily accessible from Kington, Hereford, Hay‑on‑Wye, Leominster, Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells and Ludlow.
The Role: We’re looking for a Materials Testing Technician to join our welcoming and supportive team at our Dolyhir and other sites in the area. Reporting to the Senior Technician, you’ll carry out daily sampling and testing of construction materials, primarily aggregates and asphalt. Accuracy, consistency and a strong commitment to health and safety are essential. This is not a traditional “lab coat” role – it’s a practical, site‑based position where you’ll play a key part in keeping operations running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities:
- Daily sampling and testing of aggregates and asphalt materials with a high level of accuracy
- Carrying out testing safely, in line with manual handling capabilities and Health and Safety procedures
- Conducting the majority of testing within a laboratory environment using ovens, furnaces, sieves, weighing equipment and other scientific apparatus
- Monitoring and reporting on material quality for both internal and external customers
- Maintaining strict adherence to Company Health and Safety standards at all times
- Occasional sampling and testing at other regional sites when required
About You: This role would suit someone who is hard working, proactive and adept at recognising issues and problem solving. We welcome applications from experienced technicians; however, if you don’t have experience but are keen to develop the appropriate skills then full training can be provided.
You Will Have:
- Laboratory or materials testing experience within construction, aggregates or asphalt (advantageous but not essential)
- A strong work ethic and self‑motivation
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Good communication skills, with the confidence to liaise across different teams and seniority levels
- The ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team
- IT literacy and a good numerical aptitude (calculations and data interpretation)
- Flexibility in your working approach
- A strong awareness of Health and Safety
- Driving licence essential
