About MotionTech
MotionTech is a specialist manufacturer and provider of materials handling solutions, designing and building mechanical systems including conveyors, frames, and automated handling equipment for customers across the UK. The business has a strong engineering heritage and a shopfloor culture built on quality, safety, and getting the job done properly. The team is hands‑on, straight‑talking, and takes real pride in what they build.
The Role
This is a hands‑on lead position overseeing a team of ten assembly operatives and fitters in a busy mechanical assembly environment. You will report directly to the Production Manager and be responsible for the day‑to‑day delivery of mechanical assembly activity — keeping work safe, on time, and built to standard. Success in this role means a team that works well, quality that holds, and a shopfloor you are proud to run.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead and coordinate the mechanical assembly team daily, allocating work against plan and priorities
- Coach and develop operatives on skills, quality standards, and safe working behaviours
- Assemble mechanical equipment to drawings and specifications (conveyors, frames, guards, rollers, motors)
- Interpret engineering drawings, BOMs, and work instructions; flag discrepancies early
- Run pre‑task briefings, toolbox talks, and daily safety checks to maintain a safe shopfloor
- Carry out quality checks at first‑off, in‑process, and final stages; elevate concerns promptly
- Support planning, material readiness, and cross‑department communication to keep production on track
- Drive 5S housekeeping standards: clear walkways, correct storage, and zero‑tolerance on unsafe practice
What You’ll Bring
Essential
- A solid background in mechanical assembly in a manufacturing or engineering environment
- Experience leading a small team as a team leader, lead hand, or senior fitter
- Confident reading engineering drawings, BOMs, and build instructions
- Good working knowledge of workshop safety: manual handling, power tools, lifting, PPE
- Time‑served apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience (NVQ Level 2/3, City & Guilds)
Useful, not essential
- Experience assembling conveyors or material handling equipment
- Forklift, overhead crane, or lifting gear training
- Familiarity with lean / 5S and continuous improvement principles
- IOSH Working Safely or First Aid at Work (or willingness to complete)
