Job summary
We are seeking an experienced Operations Manager to join our team in Wales, operating within a high‑security environment. This highly visible role involves ensuring exceptional service delivery to our customer while leading and developing an operational team.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the customer to understand fully their requirements and expectations as the Metro Supply Chain operational lead for Spares and look for opportunities to enhance our offering.
- Achieve and improve KPIs and SLA requirements.
- Understand customer issues and drive business improvements to aid resolution.
- Support, coach and manage supervisors and direct reports.
- Recruit, train, develop and motivate staff within the framework of job descriptions, competency and skills matrix.
- Plan resources against future capacity requirements.
- Optimise the utilisation of all assets across the operations.
- Ensure stock control systems are kept up to date and work with the inventory manager to keep inventories accurate.
- Work with senior management to apply H&S best practice and conduct investigations and corrective actions.
- Support the development of MJDI WMS throughout the operation.
- Identify, analyse and implement operational improvements through tools such as “Always Improving” and Gemba walks to promote continuous improvement culture.
- Report any health and safety issues (accidents or near misses) as required.
- Develop relationships throughout the business, working with direct reports and counterparts across other sites.
- In tandem with the Operations Director, senior general manager, and finance team produce business operating plans with financial plans and budgets to drive costs down and improve service.
- Ensure the implementation of company audit schedules.
- Identify areas of risk to the business and develop appropriate contingency plans.
- Attend and support regular reviews with the customer and operational team with action‑driven minutes.
- Work with managers to identify and optimise the total supply chain solution offering to the customer.
Experience
- Demonstrable experience within a logistics or manufacturing environment or similar.
- Experience in MJDI.
- Experience managing external relationships with external agencies/organisations.
- Experience within a unionised environment.
- Excellent customer service skills; client‑facing.
- Strong leadership experience with the ability lead a range of people.
Knowledge and Skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Valid driving licence – travel between sites is essential.
Health and Safety
- Ensure all staff follow work instructions and comply with ISO 9001 standards.
- Communicate any non‑conformance within the ISO management system.
- Raise any upcoming changes that could affect ISO management system.
- Follow environmental policies and procedures and highlight any risks to personnel or environment.Ensure compliance with legislative bodies and local authorities.
- Without compromise maintain a safe and clean work environment.
- Follows Occupational Health and Safety Act including safety, violence and harassment laws.
- Reports hazards in the workplace to management.
- Do not use or operate equipment in a manner that endangers self or others.
- Do not put other workers at risk by actions.
Measurements of Success
- Continued accreditation of ISO 9001 & introduction of ISO 14001.
- Consistently meet or exceed daily operations KPIs for pick accuracy, quality, damages and safety.
- Positively influence performance of others to achieve team operational KPIs.
- Provide proactive, accurate, fact‑based feedback regarding team member performance.
- Lead team briefings and actively participate in raising team members’ concerns.
