Who we are: Modern Networks, established in 2000, is a growing IT Managed Service Provider (MSP) and Internet Service Provider (ISP) specialising in delivering services to the property management sector and commercial businesses nationwide. We work closely with customers to deliver a wide range of IT services, from endpoint technology to connectivity and telephony. Our partnerships with market‑leading vendors enable us to deliver first‑class services and solutions.

The Job: The Network & Systems Engineer is the senior subject‑matter expert for the ISP core network and Operations Support Systems (OSS). The role is responsible for ensuring the ISP network and platforms are robust, reliable, well‑designed, and continuously improving. The role focuses on deep technical ownership, engineering quality, innovation, and mentorship, acting as a high‑level technical escalation point and trusted advisor to the Head of Technology & Engineering. While architectural direction and major strategic decisions sit with the Head of Technology & Engineering, this role provides authoritative technical input, recommendations, and hands‑on expertise within agreed architectural frameworks.

What we are looking for:

  • Deep expertise in ISP network design, performance optimisation, and troubleshooting, ideally supported by professional‑level qualifications (e.g. JNCIP or equivalent experience)
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, Fortinet NSE, JNCIA, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of ISP routing and transport technologies, including BGP, MPLS, OSPF, and related control‑plane and data‑plane concepts
  • Hands‑on experience operating and evolving multi‑vendor network environments, ideally including Juniper, Mikrotik, and Cisco platforms
  • Proven experience designing and operating secure network and systems architectures, including AAA, RADIUS, TACACS, and 802.1X
  • Hands‑on experience operating, designing and supporting PPPoE infrastructure such as BNGs, LNSs and RADIUS.
  • Strong understanding of systems architecture, platform reliability, observability, and service orchestration in an ISP environment
  • Ability to analyse complex technical problems and produce clear, evidence‑based engineering recommendations
  • Strong capability to research, test, and evaluate emerging technologies, translating findings into practical improvements
  • Experience leading technical proofs‑of‑concept and prototyping improvements across reliability, automation, and operational efficiency
  • Ability to design solutions that balance resilience, security, scalability, and operational simplicity

What you’ll get from us:

  • Great prospects - once you’ve got to grips with our systems and processes, you’ll have the opportunity to progress with us.
  • Knowledgeable, high-achieving, experienced and fun colleagues
  • A career with room for your personal life in a work environment where everyone knows the value of a healthy work-life-balance
  • Commitment to diversity - we hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes us stronger.
  • 25 days annual leave + bank holidays

Sounds like you? If you share our values and our enthusiasm for delivering a world class service, you will find a home here at Modern. Or if you’re still not convinced, drop us a line – we’ll arrange an informal chat about the role.
