An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Substation Engineer to join a leading engineering consultancy delivering major projects across the transmission, distribution, industrial and renewable energy sectors. This role offers the opportunity to work on complex HV and EHV projects, supporting critical infrastructure and helping shape the future of the UK energy landscape. You will join a highly regarded team delivering innovative engineering solutions and working closely with clients on some of the industry's most significant projects.
The Role
- Lead and support the delivery of engineering and construction projects, taking ownership of project activities while engaging with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
- Manage client relationships from initial engagement through to project delivery.
- Deliver new build, retrofit and network reinforcement projects.
- Produce electrical engineering design deliverables.
- Develop safe, practical and cost-effective substation solutions.
- Interpret Grid specifications, DNO standards and British/IEC regulations.
- Identify and mitigate health and safety risks.
- Apply CDM regulations on HV and EHV projects.
- Coordinate with civils, protection & control, earthing and studies teams.
- Prepare HV and EHV plant specifications and review supplier documentation.
- Support bid submissions and proposal development.
- Deliver work to agreed quality, budget and programme requirements.
About You
The successful candidate is likely to have:
- Degree qualification (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering.
- Experience working within regulated transmission and distribution environments.
- Strong knowledge of HV Substation Primary Plant design.
- Proven experience delivering AIS and GIS substation projects from 11kV up to 400kV.
- Experience with feasibility studies, reports, cost estimates and engineering documentation.
- Understanding of transmission technologies and network operation.
- Experience with LV and substation power distribution systems.
- Experience working on Grid and/or DNO projects.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- The ability to manage competing priorities within a collaborative environment.
Desirable experience:
- CDAE/LCDAE authorisation.
- Amtech experience for LVAC fuse/MCCB selectivity studies.
- HVDC primary plant knowledge.
