Overview: In your role as a Fire Engineer, your engagement will encompass all aspects of the fire engineering cycle. Your primary responsibility will be leading the design and implementation of fire strategies across various projects, including super‑high‑rise buildings, data centres, airports, rail infrastructure, malls, boutique office structures, theatres, stadiums, hospitals, and everything in between. As a Fire Engineer, you will be involved in all aspects of fire engineering. In the early stages of project design, your role will embrace working with the internal team to take on a range of tasks to ensure that the Project Design Team is aware of the implications that their decisions have on the fire safety strategy of the building. This may require an in‑depth analysis of the design, which could include Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), smoke control calculations or evacuation modelling, depending on the situation.

Profile: Fire Engineer – Sheffield Office

Reporting to Senior Fire Engineer(s), Associate Fire Engineer(s), Associate Director(s), Director(s)

Key duties:

  • Attend and make a positive contribution to internal meetings, supporting the continual improvement of our wider fire engineering industry.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative and inclusive working environment, including offering mediation and conflict resolution where required, and helping to create a fun and creative workplace for all team members.
  • Work closely with colleagues across all offices, supporting fire engineers at all levels and collaborating effectively with international external partners where required.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, innovations and best practice in fire engineering, sharing relevant knowledge with the team and continually advancing professional competence through CPD, with the aim of achieving Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
  • Promote professional development, skills sharing and knowledge transfer initiatives, including contributing to graduate training schemes and supporting the career development of graduate and junior engineers.
  • Possess a strong understanding of relevant fire safety legislation, advocating for the regular review and enhancement of internal procedures to ensure ongoing compliance with current requirements.
  • Create, develop and deliver fire engineering solutions and strategies, using both prescriptive and performance‑based approaches across a wide range of sectors, and provide clear guidance to clients on regulatory compliance and industry standards.
  • Oversee and manage fire engineering projects, coordinating resources and tasks to meet programme and budget requirements, while maintaining awareness of project financial performance.
  • Produce high‑quality technical reports, clearly setting out assumptions, methodologies, bases of design and recommendations.
  • Attend and contribute to design team meetings, and liaise with client representatives as required.
  • Attend site visits and undertake inspections where required, ensuring full compliance with Health and Safety regulations and the correct use of protective and safety equipment.
  • Support business development activities, including preparing proposals, identifying and nurturing new business opportunities, promoting our services and developing a strong client network.
  • Be customer and end‑user focused in the delivery of all services.
  • Support recruitment initiatives and participate in interview and selection processes for new team members.
  • Operate at all times in accordance with company terms and conditions, policies, and quality assurance systems.
  • In time, support the company research initiatives and contribute to the publication of technical articles, conference papers and journal publications.
  • Undertake any other duties within the scope and competence of the role, as reasonably required.
