Responsibilities and duties of the Principal Electrical Engineer role

  • Lead the design and development of electrical systems for complex maritime and engineering projects.
  • Define system architectures, select components, and ensure compliance with electrical safety and EMC standards.
  • Produce and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and cable assembly documentation.
  • Support system integration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Conduct design reviews and ensure technical accuracy across specifications and engineering documentation.
  • Collaborate with software, mechanical, and systems engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers to enhance team capability.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance across electrical engineering activities and project teams.
  • Work with suppliers and customers to resolve technical challenges and support project delivery.
  • Maintain and develop electrical design data packs and associated technical documentation.

Professional qualifications

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of electrical system design, power distribution, control systems, and safety compliance.
  • Experience using electrical CAD software packages.
  • Knowledge of CE/UKCA directives, EMC regulations, electrical safety requirements, and relevant industry standards.
  • Experience designing for cost, manufacturability, and testability.
  • Understanding of system integration, validation, and debugging activities.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, motor control systems, and industrial automation would be advantageous.
  • Previous experience providing technical leadership within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Eligibility to obtain Security Clearance (SC).
