Here at 1st Step Solutions, we are supporting a leading M&E Building Services specialist who are currently recruiting an Electrical and Mechanical Estimator to join their team based in Cheltenham or their Nottingham Office. The company has been established 91 years, specialising in Commercial and Industrial Projects across Education, Healthcare, Defence and Hospitality sectors.

As an Estimator, you will be responsible for accurately estimating the cost of commercial projects, preparing detailed proposals, and collaborating with the Project Management and sales team to ensure successful project delivery. To be successful in this role, you must have a knowledge and understanding of pre-construction planning processes, Design & Build contracts and current CDM compliance regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare, review and interpret tender documentation, specifications and electrical / mechanical drawings to ensure a clear understanding of project scope and requirements.
  • Identify and assess potential risks, opportunities, and value engineering options throughout the bid stage, recommending practical solutions.
  • Prepare and submit high-quality, competitive electrical and M&E tender packages, clearly outlining all assumptions, qualifications, and exclusions.
  • Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain accurate, timely, and cost-effective quotations to support detailed pricing.
  • Attend site visits and client meetings to validate tender information and ensure alignment on scope and delivery expectations.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of current industrial regulations, standards (including CDM and BSRIA stages), and market trends to inform tender strategies.
  • Analyse and compare subcontractor and supplier quotes, negotiating favourable terms where appropriate to enhance bid competitiveness.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, sales teams, and other internal stakeholders to ensure seamless handover and successful project delivery.
  • Participate in post-tender reviews and client negotiations, contributing to bid refinement and contract finalisation.
  • Monitor awarded projects against original estimates, providing input into forecasting, cost control, and process improvement initiatives.
Skills & Experience Required
  • Professional qualification in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering or a related field (HNC/HND or degree is desirable but not essential).
  • Proven expertise in estimating and bid management, ideally with 5+ years in a similar role.
  • Experience across a range of project sectors including education, health care, commercial, and industrial developments.
  • Confident preparing tenders at both subcontractor and Principal Contractor levels.
  • Strong commercial awareness with a keen eye for detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with clients, suppliers, and team members.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and industry-standard estimating software.
  • Must hold a full UK driving licence.
