Job Summary: Reporting to the Managing Quantity Surveyor, this position requires someone with a proven track record in the construction of Civil Engineering developments in the UK. The Senior Quantity Surveyor will be responsible for the commercial function of a major project in Glasgow, including raising orders, detailed cost control and recovery of value on the project. Experience with NEC contracts, preferably Option C, and effective subcontractor management are key. Compilation of delay analysis and associated loss and expense claims is highly preferable.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish the project budget including allocation of cost codes to ensure accurate cost reporting.
  • Review main contract and subcontract terms and conditions, including stepping down conditions.
  • Procure subcontract packages and compile tender documentation.
  • Report on costs to date and forecast cost to completion.
  • Administer the main contract and subcontracts, including compiling contractual correspondence related to delays and loss and expense.
  • Regularly liaise and interface with the Employers team for commercial aspects.
  • Manage staff resources to ensure project costs are known and managed.
  • Carry out delay analysis including preparing narratives and loss and expense for claims.
  • Handle subcontract issues as they arise.
  • Ensure variation / compensation event mechanism is correctly followed.
  • Forecast cash flow and compile budget.
  • Prepare and submit monthly payment applications including forecast cost to complete and meet contract administration requirements.
  • Liaise with procurement to set and agree allowances.
  • Attend progress and commercial meetings and represent the company commercially.
  • Use company software to manage reporting, forecasting, subcontractor payments and contract documentation.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Third level qualification (degree or similar).
  • Demonstrated previous experience in a commercial/QS role at a senior level.
  • Experience across heavy civils sectors such as highways, rail, marine projects.
  • Contract knowledge: Understanding of specific contracts and ability to take appropriate action.
  • Cost control skills: deliver results, set targets, forecast ahead.
  • Negotiation skills: present viewpoints confidently, structure cases persuasively.
  • Problem solving and decision making: evaluate multiple factors and make sound decisions.

  • Professional qualification (e.g., MRICS/MCICES).
