Energy Aspects has an exciting new opportunity in our freight team, based in either London or Athens. We are looking for an analyst with a strong shipping background to play a central role in our coverage of the clean and dirty tanker markets, supporting our freight analysis and forecasts and supporting our wider crude and products research and Maritime Analytics service.

Responsibilities will include fundamental analysis of oil tanker markets and freight rate forecasts. The successful candidate will be expected to hold a strong, data-backed view on forward freight markets. Experience in maintaining and advancing the models that underpin our freight outlook, using our proprietary vessel tracking and maritime intelligence data, will be key. You will be responsible for both numerical and written outputs to our clients, including weekly commentary on the clean and dirty tanker markets, communicating complex information effectively to an audience with varying levels of technical expertise, alongside responding to client queries and ad hoc requests. This will entail working closely with our crude and products markets teams on arbitrage analysis and key trade flow trends, ensuring our freight views are fully integrated into our wider market analysis. There may also be opportunities to present at conferences and client meetings, while attending events and interacting with the media. The role demands adaptability and a commitment to excellence as part of a collaborative team. We encourage all our team members to cultivate their professional standing within the industry, backed by some of the industry's most esteemed commentators.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and possess the organisational skills necessary for planning and prioritising tasks to achieve outstanding results. In exchange, we offer excellent remuneration, a high-performance culture, with challenging and exciting work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analysing the oil tanker freight market across key routes and vessel classes, providing regular weekly and ad hoc commentary both for the clean and dirty tanker market.
  • Maintaining vessel supply and demand balances, including fleet utilisation.
  • Producing freight rate forecasts and articulating data-driven views on the forward freight market.
  • Maintaining and advancing the analytical models that underpin our freight coverage.
  • Working with the markets team on arbitrage analysis and key trends.
  • Analysing trends in the spot and time charter markets.
  • Maintaining and advancing our Maritime Analytics data offering.
  • Highlight dislocations in freight markets, shifts in vessel positioning and changes in trade flows.
  • Tracking regulatory changes affecting tanker markets.
  • Producing presentation material for clients and responding to client queries.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • Demonstrable knowledge of shipping economics, freight markets, chartering and logistics for crude and products.
  • Broad understanding of global crude and products markets.
  • Previous experience in a shipping or freight environment.
  • Experience using maritime intelligence tools and vessel tracking data.
  • Experience building and maintaining models and forecasts.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel is required; experience with Python and AI tools is desirable but not essential.
  • Good technical spoken and written English skills, preferably including writing reports for a non-technical audience.
  • The ability to meet deadlines and work effectively with others, including colleagues in different time zones, to deliver timely analysis will be critical.
  • Attention to detail is a prerequisite for this role in both handling data and written English.
