My client is a sustainability-focused engineering consultancy delivering solutions to the built environment.

The Role

They are seeking a Principal Sustainability Consultant to join their established sustainability team within a regional business unit, working as part of a wider national discipline.

Key responsibilities

  • Leading sustainability delivery on medium to large-scale projects across all RIBA stages
  • Acting as Discipline Project Lead or Workstream Lead on complex projects
  • Leading client and design team workshops
  • Managing resources, delegating work, and reviewing outputs
  • Delivering and overseeing technical work including:
  • Energy and building performance modelling (Part L, Part O, thermal comfort, operational energy)
  • Environmental and wellbeing certifications (e.g. BREEAM, HQM, WELL)
  • Energy and net zero carbon strategies
  • Whole life carbon assessments
  • Mentoring and supporting junior team members
  • About You

    You will be operating at Principal level within sustainability consultancy and looking for your next challenge. You will have strong experience in energy and building performance, project leadership, and client-facing consultancy. You will likely have:

    • A relevant degree and professional body membership (Chartership advantageous)
    • Experience leading projects and mentoring junior staff
    • Knowledge of environmental certifications and whole life carbon assessment
    • Strong communication and workshop facilitation skills
    • A genuine commitment to sustainability

    Experience with operational energy modelling, Design for Performance, Passivhaus, circular economy, or line management would be advantageous but is not essential.
