Job Purpose
The Engineering Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of the Engineering and technical function aligned with the business vision, mission and objectives. They are a critical part of the leadership team and form the lynchpin for successful transformational change through leadership of a multi skilled Engineering department consisting of highly trained Project Engineers, CAD Engineers and Li-Ion cell Engineers for space flight.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Leadership and goal setting for the department
- Delivery to the business of revenue generating hours
- Monitoring internal department project hours/schedule/cost adherence
- Reviewing and agreeing project priority (internally to department, and at business level)
- Timely delivery of cells to projects
- Verification of product as flight suitable through test and analysis
- Ensuring Technical inputs to projects (internal and external) are of sufficient quality
- Developing and implementing department cost reduction and improvement strategy
- Communication of department information within the business
- Defining, tracking and reporting department KPIs
- Defining and maintaining the department process document system
- Audit preparation and participation
As Engineering Manager, the role will be accountable for managing their direct reports and co-ordinating across the department, including:
- Timesheets/absence monitoring/annual leave etc
- Setting of goals/objectives and performing appraisals
- Training and career development plans
- Co-ordinating and prioritising work and resource across the department
- Organising and chairing department meetings
- Resource loading and needs identification
- Recruitment
The postholder will be expected to:
- Foster a culture of innovation & delivery excellence
- Develop new processes & methodologies for executing the Engineering function through utilisation of emerging technologies such as AI and other digital innovations
- Be comfortable implementing new ways of working into an established team and the wider business
Knowledge/Experience
- A bachelor's degree in STEM subject, or industry equivalent qualification.
- 10 years relevant experience within a highly regulated industry
- Demonstrable ability to lead, coach, develop and foster a culture of innovation & delivery excellence
- Experience of providing technical assurance, guidance and support to commercial customers
- Experience of new product development activities
- Experience and understanding of Project delivery requirements & frameworks
- A focus on mentoring and developing others, leading the continued development and maintenance of a quality culture within the Engineering department
- Strong skills with MS Office / Office 365 suite of programs
Desirable
- Battery design & requirement management, or European Space Industry Standards (ECSS)
- Experience working with aerospace industry primes, agencies, and end users.
- Experience of Agile development methodologies
