We are seeking a Property Underwriter, AVP candidate to join the dynamic Property Reinsurance Team within Sompo International's Zurich Office.

Sompo International's Global Property and Property Catastrophe Team is widely regarded in the reinsurance market as a high profile, market leading and innovative team.

We are looking for a candidate to join our European Team to be based in Zurich and work alongside our existing team of analysts and underwriters.

The successful candidate will combine excellent interpersonal and team working skills with a strong analytical approach to underwriting.

The candidate will be entrusted to underwrite and manage select accounts within an existing portfolio of business whilst using their networking and marketing skills to develop new opportunities.

The position reports to SVP, Head of European Property and Catastrophe Reinsurance.

Responsibilities include

  • Contribute to the growth and profitability of the Property Treaty and Property Catastrophe portfolio by underwriting, marketing, and managing select accounts from the European property/ property catastrophe portfolio with goals of maximizing the expected profitability and risk-adjusted return on capital.
  • Ad-hoc projects within the team.
  • Assisting the Underwriting team with help preparing UW documents, client and broker reports and internal reporting where required.
  • Assisting the UW team with entering contract details within the Sompo internal systems where required.
  • Build/broaden existing relationships with clients and brokers while also developing new business opportunities where possible.
  • Actively participate in the development of the European strategy as well as the Global Property/ Property Catastrophe underwriting and portfolio diversification strategies.
  • Routinely analyze contracts and wordings and ensure appropriate pricing and utilization of capacities.
  • Manage the underwriting process and the internal interaction with underwriters, analysts, and actuaries
  • Perform contract negotiations with clients and brokers.
  • Routinely perform market analyses to identify market inefficiencies and develop strategies and products
  • Assist in the further development of the Company's reputation as a first tier, world-class property reinsurer
  • Other duties as determined by management, including but not limited to special projects, integrations, global projects etc.

Desired Skills & Experience: The candidate needs to

  • Up to 5 years of relevant industry experience, ideally with a property treaty/property catastrophe underwriting/broking background.
  • University graduate with a degree in finance, economics, or natural sciences with advanced degree of ACII or CPCU designation (or equivalent) preferred
  • Preference for a candidate with language skills
  • Strong networking skills and relationships with clients and brokers in Europe
  • Willingness to undertake international business travel as the role requires
  • Willingness to build into independently undertaking marketing activities with clients and brokers.
  • Familiarity with models and other analytical tools, preference for a candidate with strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyse, and disseminate significant amounts of information
  • A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace
  • Excels at operating in a fast pace, community environment with ability to manage time effectively, set priorities and meet deadlines
