Howden Markets is seeking a Data Engineer to strengthen the foundations of our analytics capability. This is a newly created, individual‐contributor role focused on building trusted, scalable analytics through high‐quality data modelling, curated datasets, and strong Power BI and Databricks practices. Working closely with analysts, Group Data and business stakeholders, you will help define the datasets and technical standards that underpin analytics delivery across Howden Markets. The role is centred on influence, enablement, and technical leadership. Howden Markets is a fast‐paced, globally connected team representing the interests of Howden Broking, Howden Reinsurance and DUAL. We operate at the intersection of strategy and execution, with data at the heart of how we drive intelligent decision‐making, operational excellence, and service innovation.
What you’ll be doing
- Analytics engineering & data modelling
- Design, build and maintain curated analytical datasets that support high quality insights development Howden Markets.
- Work closely with Group Data and Howden Markets stakeholders to shape data models that reflect business needs, support performance, and scale effectively.
- Enable enrichment of existing Howden Markets datasets by sourcing, integrating and modelling new sources of data.
- Ensure views and semantic models are robust, well documented, and aligned to agreed business definitions and governance standards.
- Engage early in analytics initiatives to influence data structures and modelling decisions to enable effective downstream reporting.
- Power BI & Databricks best practice
- Define, embed and promote best practices for Power BI & Databricks, including:
- Transformation and modelling patterns
- Performance optimisation
- Workspace, capacity and tenant usage standards
- Alignment with Group Data architecture
- Act as a technical escalation point for complex modelling, semantic, or platform related questions.
- Technical leadership
- Support and mentor HM Data Team analysts as they upskill in Power BI and Databricks, acting as a trusted technical reference point.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of analytics engineering capability across the team.
- Peer review analytical solutions where required to ensure quality, consistency, and performance ahead of production.
- Provide timely technical input to support decision-making and prevent issues before they escalate.
- Collaboration & stakeholder engagement
- Build strong working relationships with Howden Markets analysts, functional stakeholders and Group Data engineering and platform teams.
- Participate where appropriate in stakeholder sessions to explain data structures, modelling decisions, and technical constraints in clear, accessible terms.
What qualifications we’re looking for
- Experience in Databricks, SQL and Power BI is essential.
- Curious and collaborative in nature, with great interpersonal skills. Confident in engaging with a diverse set of stakeholders.
- 2+ years of insurance industry experience. Experience in London Market insurance is preferred but not essential.
- Experience of metadata ingestion processes.
- Technically relevant or industry recognised qualifications are a plus (e.g. CII, Microsoft Certifications etc.).
