Community & Outreach Lead — Volunteer Team Manager in Portsmouth

Lead ESC's community presence across the South Coast. As our Outreach Team Lead, you'll manage our volunteer team, oversee event staffing, and act as the vital link between our outreach volunteers and our trustee board.

What difference will you make? ESC is growing its community presence across the South Coast, and the Community & Outreach Team Lead is the person who makes that growth possible in practice. Without this role, there is no one ensuring that every event is staffed before it takes place. There is no reliable conduit between our outreach volunteers and the trustee board. There is no one holding the overall picture of our community programme, spotting the gaps, managing the people, and making sure nothing falls through. This role provides all of that. The impact is felt across the whole organisation.

Our outreach volunteers will have a clear, supportive point of contact who keeps them informed, values their contribution, and ensures the load is shared fairly. Our Event Coordinator will have an experienced line manager who helps them grow in the role and ensures their work is aligned with ESC's strategic priorities. And our Trustee Lead will have accurate, timely information flowing to them from the ground, giving the board the visibility it needs to make good decisions.

For the people we serve, the difference is just as significant. A well‑led outreach team means ESC shows up consistently and confidently in the community, at health fairs, awareness events, and community gatherings across the South Coast. Every staffed event is an opportunity to reach someone who has never heard of us, to put support in front of someone who didn't know it existed, and to remind someone already in our community that they are not alone. This role doesn't just help ESC operate, it helps ESC grow into the kind of charity that is embedded in its community, trusted by the people it serves, and capable of sustaining that presence long into the future.

What are we looking for? We are looking for someone with at least three years of experience in a leadership, team coordination, or volunteer management role — someone who is genuinely comfortable leading people and knows how to bring out the best in a small, dedicated team. People skills are at the core of this role. Our ideal volunteer is warm, clear, and dependable, someone their team feels they can go to with questions or concerns, and someone who gives volunteers the direction and support they need to do their jobs well.

They will also need to be comfortable working across different levels of an organisation, communicating just as effectively with a trustee as with a first‑time volunteer. Strong organisational ability is equally important. Managing volunteer scheduling across a full events calendar, tracking availability, confirming attendance, and handling last‑minute changes requires someone methodical and proactive, and who doesn't let things slip. They will need to maintain clear records and stay ahead of the calendar, rather than reacting to problems after they arise.

We need someone with sound judgement. This role involves identifying and escalating issues, whether that's a gap in event coverage, a concern within the team, or a reputational risk, and doing so promptly and appropriately. We are looking for someone who can be trusted to handle sensitive information with discretion and to make good decisions independently. A genuine commitment to ESC's mission is essential. Whether through lived experience of endometriosis, supporting someone close to them, or a broader commitment to health equity and community support, we want our Team Lead to care deeply about the work we do and the people we serve.

Desirable experience includes working within the voluntary or charity sector; familiarity with the South Coast community landscape; knowledge of safeguarding principles; and experience acting as a liaison between operational teams and senior stakeholders or governance structures.

Hybrid Endometriosis South Coast is a registered charity supporting people along the South Coast who are living with or being diagnosed with endometriosis — a debilitating and frequently misunderstood condition affecting around 1 in 10 people. We provide peer support, education, and community connection to ensure no one faces this condition alone.

We are looking for an experienced and people‑focused volunteer to take on the role of Community & Outreach Team Lead. Requiring around 1-2 hours per week, this is one of our more senior volunteer positions and one of the most impactful. At the heart of this role is people leadership. You will line‑manage our Community & Outreach Event Coordinator, providing regular check‑ins, guidance, and sign‑off on event bookings. You will also lead our wider group of outreach volunteers, the people who attend events on ESC's behalf, ensuring they are well briefed, fairly scheduled, and properly supported.

A core responsibility is making sure every confirmed event is staffed. You will maintain an up‑to‑date picture of volunteer availability, proactively confirm attendance ahead of each event, and manage any last‑minute changes with composure. No event should go ahead without the right people in place, and it's your job to make sure that never happens.

You will also serve as the key link between our volunteer team and the Trustee Lead for Community & Outreach. This means providing structured, regular updates to the trustee on the programme's progress, advocating for your volunteers, and relaying decisions and priorities back to the team clearly and promptly. Beyond the day‑to‑day, you will contribute to the strategic direction of ESC's outreach activity, helping to shape where and how we show up in our communities, reviewing the events calendar, and identifying growth opportunities.
