About the Role
As Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of Engineers with expertise in Electrical, Mechanical and Automation design and take overall responsibility for the design and development of our products. This role is key to ensuring that we provide robust and high-quality engineering solutions for our customers whilst building strong internal partnerships to support a smooth build and installation process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, manage, and develop the engineering team including mechanical, electrical, and automation engineers
- Take responsibility for the mechanical design and development of our bespoke packaging machinery and automation systems
- Review and approve engineering drawings, calculations, and design specifications
- Support problem solving during design, build, commissioning, and customer installation phases
- Work closely with project management, production, and sales teams to ensure engineering deliverables are aligned with project timelines and budgets
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing engineering culture
- Provide mentoring, coaching, and technical guidance to Engineers at all levels
- Manage engineering resources to support multiple concurrent machinery projects
- Support customer interactions where technical clarification or engineering input is required
- Ensure machinery designs comply with relevant standards including CE/UKCA requirements and machine safety directives
- Maintain high standards of technical documentation and revision control
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- Significant experience in mechanical design of industrial machinery or automation equipment
- Proven people management or engineering leadership experience
- Strong people leader who enjoys developing and supporting engineers
- Experience managing engineering activities across multiple projects
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Experience using 3D CAD design software including SolidWorks
- Pragmatic and hands-on approach suited to an SME environment
- Able to balance technical depth with leadership responsibilities
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
Desirable:
- Experience working with packaging machinery or automated systems
- Understanding of electrical systems, controls, PLC integration, and machine automation
- Knowledge of machine safety standards, CE/UKCA marking, and risk assessment processes
- Experience working in an SME manufacturing environment
- Chartered Engineer status (or working towards)
