Are you a compassionate, reliable, and proactive individual looking for a rewarding role where you can make a real difference? A young, independent woman with Multiple Sclerosis and living in Galashiels is seeking a friendly and dedicated Personal Assistant to join her small, supportive team. As a result of the MS, both manual and electric wheelchairs are used depending on which best suits the day’s activity. There is also a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) used to travel to various activities. Training will be provided on wheelchairs and WAV. A speech difficulty requires patience. This is a unique opportunity to provide person‑centred care, help maintain independence, and support access to appointments, social activities, and the wider community.

Days of work are Wednesdays and Thursdays with precise hours being discussed and agreed on a weekly basis. Consideration would be given to working only one of these days with another PA covering the second day.

What You’ll Do

  • Support safe transfers and mobility, ensuring comfort and dignity
  • Drive and accompany the client to appointments, social events, and community activities
  • Be prepared to occasionally suggest activities which might be of interest
  • Help with day‑to‑day tasks that make life easier and more enjoyable
  • Assist with toilet if required when out and about

  • Experience in moving and handling is desirable, but full training is available
  • Applicant must be able to undertake moving and handling responsibilities and provide consistent physical support as part of person‑centred care
  • Practical, reliable, and a confident communicator
  • Able to work professionally and discreetly within a family environment
  • A valid manual gearbox driving licence is essential

  • Flexible hours: average 5.5 retained hours per week, with an average of 6.5 hours. Opportunities to cover extra shifts for annual leave or sickness
  • Mileage allowance negotiable

  • 5.6 weeks’ annual leave (pro rata)
  • After 12 months service up to 4 weeks sick pay in any 12‑month period based on retained hours
  • Annual pay review on 1st January to adjust for CPI inflation

Requirements

  • Due to the personal care needs of the individual, this role is open to female applicants only. This is a genuine occupational requirement in accordance with Equality Act 2010.
  • PVG check and references will be required
  • Full manual gearbox driving licence
