- Technical Claims Handler
- Bristol | Hybrid
- Permanent | 35 hours per week | Monday–Friday (2-3 days in the office)
There are Claims Handler roles where you simply manage your own caseload.
This isn't one of them.
We're partnering with a fast-growing specialist insurance business in Bristol that is continuing to invest in and grow its claims function.
They're looking for an experienced Technical Claims Handler who can become a go-to technical expert within the team — handling the more complex claims yourself, while supporting and developing the wider claims team.
It's an excellent opportunity for an experienced Claims Handler who enjoys the technical side of claims, wants greater responsibility and likes helping others make better decisions.
What will you be doing?
- Handling complex claims
- Own more complex, high-value and technically challenging claims from notification through to settlement
- Assess policy coverage, liability, quantum and overall claims strategy
- Review reserves, indemnity decisions and settlement outcomes
- Identify potential fraud, coverage concerns and claims requiring escalation
- Ensure claims are handled fairly and consistently in line with FCA requirements and insurer mandates
- Becoming the team's technical point of contact
- Act as the first point of referral for technical and procedural queries
- Support Claims Handlers with complex customer issues and disputes
- Provide technical guidance and coaching
- Help improve decision-making and technical capability across the wider team
- Quality assurance & sign-off
- Review and approve claims decisions within delegated authority
- Carry out QA reviews and provide constructive feedback
- Support claims file audits
- Ensure decisions are properly evidenced and documented
- Payments & financial controls
- Review and authorise claim payments within agreed authority limits
- Monitor reserves, settlements and indemnity payments
- Identify potential leakage, anomalies and financial risks
- Support claims expenditure governance and reconciliation
- Developing others
- Support onboarding and training of new Claims Handlers
- Deliver technical coaching and knowledge-sharing sessions
- Identify knowledge gaps across the team
- Help develop training materials and guidance
- Promote best practice and continuous development
What are we looking for?
You'll already have significant insurance claims experience and strong technical knowledge.
Ideally, you'll bring
- Strong understanding of policy interpretation, indemnity, liability and settlements
- Experience handling complex or higher-value claims
- Experience working within delegated authority and payment approval frameworks
- Knowledge of FCA requirements and claims best practice
- Experience mentoring, coaching or technically supporting other Claims Handlers
- Strong decision-making and analytical skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Confidence explaining technical claims decisions to customers, colleagues and stakeholders
- Experience with claims management systems and reporting tools
Why consider it?
This is a chance to join a growing, modern insurance operation where you'll have significantly more influence than simply managing a caseload.
You'll become a key technical resource within the claims function, have exposure to more complex work, help develop the wider team and play a part in improving processes and claims performance as the business continues to scale.
If you're currently a Senior Claims Handler, Technical Claims Handler, Claims Specialist or an experienced Claims Handler ready for more responsibility, I'd be keen to speak with you.
