The role will suit an engineer with a good understanding of machinery design, or who has had exposure to designing for remote operations/handling, ideally gained in the nuclear industry, but those with similar experience will be considered. Robot/manipulator tooling design and development will be a key aspect of this role, as will the associated prototyping and testing of these tools.
This is a unique role, requiring a versatile engineer with the desire to help build a world-class engineering capability within a respected supplier to the nuclear decommissioning sector.
The Company
Wlischmiller is a leading UK-based engineering organisation specialising in the design, manufacture, installation, and servicing of telemanipulators and remote-handling systems for the nuclear sector. Known for exceptional reliability, precision engineering, and over 30 years of specialist expertise, the company supports critical activities in hot cells, research environments, post-irradiation examination labs, and fuel reprocessing facilities. We offer a highly technical, safety-focused environment where engineering innovation and quality standards are central to our success.
During the next 3 years, we plan to offer our customers some truly world-leading products with the aim of establishing ourselves as a leader in the provision of Remote Handling solutions. This will include Remote Handling tooling, state-of-the-art manipulators, and upgrades to existing products.

37 hours, Mon-Fri (early finish Friday)
Salary
£45 - £55,000 per annum
What You’ll Do
- Develop robust, compliant design solutions from client specifications and national standards.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models (Autodesk Inventor) and 2D manufacturing drawings (Autodesk Inventor 2D).
- Produce and verify design calculations to ensure accuracy and safety.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including projects, production, and supply chain.
- Apply lessons learned and continuously improve design processes.
- Support project delivery within budget, quality, and time targets.
What We’re Looking For
- A degree in Engineering or similar discipline.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Inventor, and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong mechanical design knowledge.
- Logical, analytical, and innovative problem-solving skills.
- The ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Demonstrable experience of mechanical system design with a focus on complex mechanism and/or special purpose machinery design.
- Excellent knowledge of 3D CAD systems and associated administration (preferably Autodesk Inventor and Vault).
- Experienced in the application of GD&T to BS8888:2020.
- Excellent understanding of how to design for different manufacturing techniques, in particular, machining, welding and 3D prototyping.
- Able to perform mechanical calculations and/or analysis to support designs.
- Familiar with the use of New Product Development processes and concepting from a clean sheet of paper.
- Have strong written/verbal communication skills.
- Ability to clearly present technical topics to a range of audiences.
- Be inquisitive by nature with excellent problem-solving ability and a self-starter.
