The Opportunity
Vehicle Platforms is one of the larger teams within the Product Engineering organisation. The department has complete responsibility for the design and development of all BIW, Interior and Exterior, Propulsion and Chassis systems; from concept design through to volume production. With an increasing emphasis on Systems Engineering and virtual development techniques, the department utilises advanced AVA CAD and CAE to support the product development process. This role in the Vehicle Structure Chapter involves working with a wide range of materials and construction techniques, challenging functional and commercial targets plus significant liaison with many internal areas of our business. It also has a significant scope for working with external component suppliers.
You will work on static sealing and corrosion prevention within the BIW structure. You’ll be responsible for the development of the components, such as adhesives, sealants, anti-flutters, cavity sealing baffles, plugs & patches, paint and cavity wax. You’ll collaborate with attribute owners like NVH and Durability & Robustness, as well as work closely with Purchase and Programme Management teams. You will be responsible for those component designs and interactions with Body Engineering, to deliver robust designs for manufacture.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Generation of 3D CAD geometry.
- Update of JIRA workflows (Issue Management) for resolution of problems.
- Create statements of work for component sourcing.
- Work with full-service suppliers to ensure on-time/on-cost project management.
- Support the Lead Engineer and Product Owners on the Vehicle Programme.
- Support component and subsystem testing.
- Engineering Releases and change management.
- Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential:
- Experience in working cross functionally with other areas with the ability to think laterally.
- Good communication and presentation skills.
- Design and development of automotive Static sealing systems.
- Data analysis and PC skills including MS Office.
- A collaborator who can work with change and can deliver to deadlines.
- Proficient in CAD creation and visualisations tools.
- Flexibility in being prepared to work at Gaydon and other locations depending on project requirements.
Desirable:
- Understanding of BIW design, stampings and body construction knowledge.
- Experience of developing and delivering new methods, processes and design solutions.
- Degree in Engineering or comparable qualification.
- Knowledge of release and change management systems.
- Experience of problem-solving tools e.g. 6 Sigma, PPS (8D), FMEA, etc.
- Experience of Programme delivery.
- Knowledge of BIW structures locator strategy and assembly process.
- Experience of system definition, system architecture development, requirements specification, design/performance modelling, systems integration, system assessment and acceptance.
