This is a hands-on senior role with genuine responsibility, direct client contact and close collaboration with our structural engineering team. Our projects are varied and include:

  • Complex structural alterations
  • Commercial properties
  • Mixed-use developments
  • New-build projects
  • Planning and Building Regulations applications
  • Detailed technical and construction design

If you combine strong architectural judgement with excellent technical knowledge and understand how buildings actually go together, we want to hear from you.

THE ROLE

You will manage your own portfolio of projects while helping maintain and develop the technical standards of EMI's architectural team. You will:

  • Lead projects from feasibility through planning, Building Regulations, detailed design and construction
  • Develop practical, buildable architectural solutions that balance design, compliance and commercial requirements
  • Prepare and manage planning and Building Regulations submissions
  • Produce and review high-quality architectural drawings using AutoCAD
  • Prepare detailed plans, sections, elevations, construction details and technical drawing packages
  • Coordinate architectural information directly with structural engineering designs and calculations
  • Deal confidently with Building Control, including technical comments and design amendments
  • Lead client discussions, design reviews and technical meetings
  • Liaise directly with structural engineers, consultants and contractors
  • Attend site inspections and resolve technical issues during construction
  • Identify design, regulatory and construction risks before they become problems
  • Manage multiple live projects while maintaining quality and deadlines
  • Review and check architectural information produced by developing team members
  • Mentor Part I and Part II Architectural Assistants where required
  • Contribute to improving EMI's technical standards, systems and project-delivery processes

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Essential:

  • Current Architects Registration Board (ARB) registration
  • Typically 5+ years of relevant UK architectural practice experience, with demonstrable project responsibility
  • Proven experience personally leading and delivering architectural projects
  • Advanced professional AutoCAD capability – essential
  • Strong experience producing detailed Building Regulations and technical drawing packages
  • Excellent knowledge of UK Building Regulations, planning requirements and construction methods
  • Experience dealing directly with Building Control
  • Strong residential experience, including extensions, loft conversions, refurbishments, structural alterations and property conversions
  • Experience delivering projects through planning, Building Regulations and detailed technical design stages
  • Ability to interpret and coordinate structural engineering information
  • Strong technical detailing and construction knowledge
  • Experience communicating directly with clients, contractors and professional consultants
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously
  • Strong project-management, communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions and progress projects without continual supervision

Highly desirable:

  • Commercial and mixed-use project experience
  • HMO and complex residential conversion experience
  • RIBA Chartered Membership
  • Experience within a multidisciplinary architecture and structural engineering consultancy
  • Experience supervising or mentoring architectural staff
  • Experience reviewing and checking technical work produced by others
  • Strong commercial awareness and client-management capability

OUR WORKING ENVIRONMENT

AutoCAD is our principal architectural drawing platform. EMI is a multidisciplinary consultancy bringing together architectural design, structural engineering, Building Regulations and neighbourly matters. That means our Architects work directly alongside Structural Engineers rather than passing information between disconnected consultants. We also use structured digital project-management systems, including monday.com, to manage workloads, deadlines and project visibility. Previous monday.com experience is not required.

WHY EMI CONSULTING?

This is an opportunity to have a visible impact within a growing practice. You will have:

  • Genuine ownership and autonomy over projects
  • Exposure across the full project lifecycle
  • Direct access to structural engineering expertise
  • A broad residential, commercial and mixed-use workload
  • Direct client and contractor involvement
  • The opportunity to influence architectural and technical standards
  • Responsibility for mentoring developing team members
  • Professional development and progression opportunities
  • Competitive remuneration based on experience

We are particularly interested in Architects who enjoy solving real design and construction problems, taking responsibility and seeing projects through to successful delivery.

LOCATION

North London – office based, with site attendance across London and surrounding areas as required.

TO APPLY

Please submit:

  • Your CV
  • Your architectural portfolio
  • Examples of technical / Building Regulations drawing packages
  • Examples of relevant residential, commercial or mixed-use projects
  • A brief summary of projects you have personally led and delivered

We want to understand what you personally delivered, the responsibility you held and the technical decisions you were accountable for. If you are an experienced Architect ready for greater ownership, multidisciplinary exposure and the opportunity to help shape a growing practice, we would like to hear from you.
