The Police Lieutenant oversees the daily operations of an assigned shift within the College's Police Department, supervising patrol officers and agents to maintain discipline, enforce policy, and uphold the chain of command. The Lieutenant reports to the Chief of the Police Department and supports department leadership by managing patrol operations and developing training programs to ensure high performance. This role requires sound judgment, strong leadership, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse campus community.

Essential Job Duties

  • Manage shift operations, directing and prioritising the work activities of all assigned personnel under their command.
  • Respond to calls of serious emergencies, felonies, and other major incidents unless already actively engaged in another similarly serious incident.
  • Review reports of subordinates for comprehensiveness, clarity, grammar, and spelling before approval and submission.
  • Serve as a positive role model/mentor to subordinates and peers while promoting the Department’s mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Actively note the performance of members under their command, while providing guidance and recognition as necessary.
  • Ensure members under their command adhere to the highest standards of integrity and professional conduct.
  • Demonstrate sound judgement and discretion, and possess the ability to properly interpret and apply department policies, laws, and orders when defusing potentially volatile situations or resolving a wide range of potential problems with due regard for the safety of all involved.
  • Investigate and respond to community complaints and implement changes to address public safety concerns or recommend appropriate discipline when necessary.
  • Proactively assist the Chief with recommendations when establishing new policies and procedures to improve Department operations or prevent potential problems or issues.
  • During shifts, serve as a Department liaison to other public safety entities (Boston police, fire, EMS) to ensure a safe and secure campus.
  • Implement, supervise, and assist as necessary with the College’s emergency preparedness plan for responding to disasters and other major incidents.
  • Participate in campus safety and welfare programs such as ALICE courses, threat assessment teams, sexual assault response teams, Resident Assistant, and Resident Director training.
  • Represent the Department at various meetings as required.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by the Deputy Chief and Chief.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 years of policing supervisory experience, preferably in a campus setting.
  • Must have graduated from a full-time police recruit training academy accredited by the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council or the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) Academy for campus police officers.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license and the ability to be insured by the College’s automobile liability insurer.
  • Successful completion of annual fitness for duty assessment, including a background investigation, a psychological evaluation, and a medical release.
  • Must meet the April 1, 2020, State Police requirements for obtaining Special State Police Officer powers.
  • Must meet POST Standards for police certification.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Must be able to remain on feet for extended periods, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, and climb stairs, balance, walk, and run.
  • Must be able to access all facilities, on foot, to respond to emergency calls for service.
  • Must be able to conduct visual surveillance of individuals and surroundings.
  • Must be able to operate Department equipment.
  • Work includes exposure to elements, severe weather/temperatures, and loud noises.
  • The work environment can expose one to hazards and physical risks to personal safety.
  • Must be physically fit and able to defend community members and oneself from attack or physical assault.
  • Must be able to wear the required uniform.

  • Usual Office Conditions.
  • Must be able to work different shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime shifts as required.
