We are one of the UK’s leading print and digital design agencies for Publishing, with a specialism within the Educational Publishing sector. Our purpose is to create stunning materials that help to educate and inspire readers across the world. The Publishing Services team is an integral part of the company which supplements and supports our core design services.

The Production Editor role is crucial in supporting the studio with non-design tasks such as proof checking, carrying out corrections, text formatting, picture research, artwork commissioning and other tasks within the production of multicomponent courses and other material. A fundamental part of this role is to ensure the quality of work leaving the studio meets our exacting standards and meets deadlines.

Main Duties of the Job

  • The main responsibility of this position is to contribute to the production workflow and to be a valued member of your team, under the direction of the Publishing Services Manager.
  • This will include working, in a non-design capacity, on educational course material, primarily printed books, but also CD ROMs, interactive PDFs, web screens, apps and eBooks as required, and will include:
  • Proof checking work carried out by designers for accuracy – both editorial corrections and, with experience, maintaining the integrity of the design elements in production.
  • Carrying out editorial corrections as marked on proofs and other non-design changes.
  • Checking your own work for accuracy.
  • Text formatting – laying out text and images in Word, formatting text and making corrections.
  • Communicating closely with colleagues during the production process to ensure all information is accurate and available.
  • Assisting with commissioning suppliers, including checking editorial briefs, liaising with suppliers to maintain schedules and ensure briefs are met, as well as assessing the quality of work supplied.
  • Tracking costs and schedules to ensure products are brought out on time, on budget, and to our quality standards.
  • When required, assisting with carrying out the research of pictures for use in published material using internet-based sources.

At times of pressurised deadlines, you will be expected to work outside your contracted hours if asked, paid at the overtime rate. The job will involve using mainly the Adobe Suite of software as well as Microsoft Excel and Word to an advanced level. You will need to maintain our in-house quality control procedures, be aware of and responsible for producing work for delivery within the timescale laid down by clients and to be aware of progress in production within budget constraints – alerting your Line Manager if this is creeping over.

You will be expected to keep an accurate record of time spent on the projects you work on, both in a manual diary and using our studio management system. The work is fast-paced and requires someone who has a meticulous eye for detail when applied to working quickly, and under pressure, is highly organised and likes to take their own initiative.

Salary

£25,000.00 to £28,000.00 plus benefits. The salary range for this role is intentionally wide; this enables people with a range of experiences to apply as well as provides room for progression within the role. This is a full-time position consisting of 37.5 hours, 5 days a week (7.5 hours a day). Following a successful probation period, colleagues will be eligible for our full suite of benefits.
