EMBS Community College specialises in delivering English and maths to adults and young people. We work with learners from a wide range of backgrounds, including refugees, asylum seekers, young people who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion, young people returning to education, and those with additional learning needs. We are seeking a committed and inspiring GCSE English and/or Maths Teacher to join our team. You will deliver high-quality, engaging sessions to groups of learners working towards Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications. Many of our learners have previously been disengaged from education and may face a range of barriers to learning, including low confidence, interrupted or limited prior schooling, mental health challenges, and experiences of trauma. You will play a key role in supporting them to re-engage with learning, build trust, overcome barriers, and develop the essential literacy or numeracy skills needed for life, work, and further study.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver 21 hours of teaching per week across GCSE and/or Functional Skills English/Maths classes over a 37.5 hour week.
- Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons that are differentiated, accessible, and aligned to awarding-body requirements.
- Assess learners’ starting points and set clear, achievable learning goals.
- Mark and assess learners’ work, providing constructive feedback that supports progress.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, and achievement.
- Support learners with complex needs, low confidence, gaps in education, or limited prior schooling.
- Embed safeguarding, equality, and inclusive practice into all teaching and classroom management.
- Work collaboratively with the wider EMBS team, including counsellors, mentors, and support staff, to ensure a holistic approach to learner wellbeing and success.
- Participate in training, standardisation, team meetings, and quality assurance processes.
Person Specification
Essential
- A recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, DET, QTS, or equivalent). Or willingness to work towards.
- Subject qualification at Level 3 or above in English and/or maths (depending on specialism), or evidence of competence and experience.
- Experience teaching GCSE and/or Functional Skills English or maths.
- Experience working with diverse learner groups.
- Ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage workload effectively.
- Understanding of safeguarding, Prevent, and equality legislation.
Desirable
- Experience teaching adults, young people, or mixed-ability classes.
- Experience supporting learners with SEN, SEMH needs, or those returning to education after significant gaps.
- Experience working in community education, alternative provision, or FE settings.
- Ability to adapt teaching strategies to support learners with low literacy, low numeracy, or limited English.
