The Public Engagement Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Public Diplomacy Officer for Established Opinion Leaders (PDO/EOL) or Public Affairs Officer (PAO) designee and has no supervisory responsibilities.

Coordinates the Mission's Public Diplomacy (PD) engagement with:

  • EOL audiences (to include senior cultural, academic, and community leaders who can influence UK priority audiences to advance U.S. policy objectives);
  • cross-cutting engagement with Emerging Voices (EV) audiences (to include those who are able to influence UK attitudes toward the United States using new, often digital, communication networks rather than prominent protocol positions or established institutions).

Coordinates programs for Mission UK on Department and Mission priorities, including programming and outreach in London and across the United Kingdom. Prepares recommendations for senior level Mission officers and high-level USG visitors' regional outreach within the United Kingdom. Designs, plans, and implements a broad range of outreach, programs, and activities to engage priority audiences to advance U.S. policy objectives.

What You'll Do

Project Development & Implementation

  • Design and deliver public engagement programs targeting priority audience segments to advance U.S. foreign policy goals.
  • Identify, recruit, and nominate candidates for U.S. government exchange programs.
  • Plan and execute conferences, speaker programs, policy roundtables, and other events.
  • Support grant solicitation, award processes, and ongoing project monitoring.

Strategic Planning, Analysis & Evaluation

  • Develop detailed annual activity plans, ensuring adequate lead time for candidate selection, funding opportunities, and grant issuance.
  • Contribute to key planning documents, including the Public Diplomacy Implementation Plan (PDIP) and Mission Integrated Country Strategy (ICS).
  • Assess program outcomes against objectives and prepare evaluation reports.
  • Analyze demographic, communication, and influence patterns to identify high-impact audience groups.

Administrative Functions

  • Assist in preparing and monitoring annual and project-level budgets.
  • Serve as Grants Officer Representative, overseeing grant compliance and liaising with implementing institutions.
  • Maintain office records and track audience engagement data in PD Tools.
  • Draft office correspondence, including cables, event proposals, and evaluation reports.

Intra- & Inter-agency Coordination

  • Participate in Mission-wide policy and strategy working groups.
  • Recruit Mission experts to support audience engagement activities.
  • Collaborate with the Strategic Content team to repurpose sector content for broader audiences.
  • Coordinate with Consulate Generals in Belfast, Edinburgh, and Hamilton as needed.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

Education

  • University degree in international relations, communications, marketing, public relations, American studies, intercultural/multicultural studies, or local equivalent is required.

Experience

  • A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in a multilingual, multicultural, or multinational work environment is required, with project management, marketing, public relations, communication, or education duties as a significant part of the job.

Job Knowledge

  • Detailed knowledge of U.S. foreign policy objectives and American interests in the United Kingdom as they relate to EV/EOL institutions and experts; understanding of U.S. historical, political, economic, social and cultural forces that shape U.S. foreign policy; comprehensive knowledge of the policy focus and positions of EV audiences and EOL institutions and experts; and understanding of the factors and the influence of institutions in shaping U.K. perceptions of the United States are all required.
  • Must have general knowledge of project management, including defining project objectives, outcomes, and assessment methods.
  • Knowledge of marketing techniques, market analysis and analytics, and customer service standards in the United States and United Kingdom.
