New Civil Engineer is the publication of record for the civil engineering and infrastructure sector. The News Editor will oversee all NCE digital-first news, chair the daily news meeting and assess which stories to pursue, co-ordinating reporting across the whole NCE team. You will also decide which stories lead our output online, in print news pages, and in NCE’s daily newsletters, as well as manage the production of the NCE podcast The Engineer’s Collective.

You will make a key contribution to shaping and maintaining the consistency and integrity of NCE's tone and priorities, and alongside your own news reporting will also be required to contribute long-form journalism across campaigns, investigations, features, interviews and events. You will be expected to drive coverage that enhances NCE’s reputation for insightful, award-winning reporting, including stories that may be uncomfortable for industry leaders to read. Past examples include investigations into unmanaged pollution from highways, and human rights questions surrounding some international markets.

At heart, this role offers a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious journalist to create compelling content – including exclusives - and inspire a wider editorial team. You will lead by example and set a high standard of quality journalism, serving the interests of an engaged audience of subscribers. Infrastructure is of major strategic significance to the UK and is central to the UK government’s plans for the economy and social outcomes across the country.

Initially you will line manage two other journalists, and there may be scope to manage others following future expansion of the team.

Key responsibilities:
  • Chairing daily news meetings, allocating stories, and tackling the first edit of news material.
  • Choosing and ordering stories for daily newsletters in the morning and afternoon.
  • Selecting and editing news and analysis content for print.
  • Proofing, copy editing and fact checking the reporters’ stories and sourcing imagery where required.
  • Maintaining a calendar of foreseeable news events and monitoring the output of rival media.
  • Researching and writing your own news stories, analysis and opinion pieces, plus regular long-form contributions such as investigations and features.
  • Supporting the Editor and Deputy Editor in delivering editorial output that is legal, of high quality, and meets the needs of NCE’s audience across print, digital and social media.
  • Managing your direct reports and guiding their development.
  • Collaborating with the Production Editor to ensure material is speedily readied for publication, and that NCE stories achieve their full potential using analytics and social media.
  • Contributing to NCE’s live events and webinars.
Skills and experience:
  • Experienced journalist, ready to manage others as well as your own work.
  • Relevant experience writing/editing news material for a business audience.
  • Technical writing and/or engineering/construction writing and editing experience will be regarded favourably.
  • Excellent written English – good spelling and grammar (or diligence in using tools to support these) and attention to detail.
  • Skilled at building and maintaining the contacts needed to deliver exclusive stories.
  • Copy-editing skills to ensure stories have a sharp headline, strong angle and a clear flow of facts.
  • Familiar with journalism law and how to write effectively about a litigious industry.
  • Ready to offer guidance to other writers on angles and news gathering approach.
  • Experience of working with fast-paced, digital-first formats is preferable, as is familiarity with using analytics to help raise the performance of editorial output.
  • The ability to tackle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ideally with an interest in the technical, financial and political aspects of the industry.
Core competencies:
  • Demonstrable B2B journalism/editing skills with a strong portfolio of published news stories.
  • Comfortable with the demands of digital-first publications.
  • Good at spotting stories and following up on leads.
  • Developing stories with follow-up reports, including those broken by other publications.
  • Organised, able to plan ahead and to prioritise competing tasks.
  • Comfortable managing others, delegating work, and providing guidance in a constructive way.

  • Organised and able to plan, including managing the work of other people.
  • A good communicator, able to think on your feet.
  • Professionally presented, able to build relationships with senior industry representatives.
  • Able to speedily assimilate information, make quick decisions, and react to rapid developments.
  • Confident, self-motivated and determined to produce work of high quality.
